The Criminal Practice is seeking one (1) English

Spanish Interpreter / Translator to be based in the Queens Office. The Interpreter / Translator is responsible for interpreting and translating for defense attorneys, social workers, paralegals, mental health professionals and any other personnel engaged in the defense of a person represented by The Legal Aid Society.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide Simultaneous and Consecutive Interpretation services in legal subject matter
• Provide Interpretation services for attorneys and other staff with Spanish speaking clients in the office and in court.

Any and all interpreting services will be rendered only in the presence of a Legal Aid attorney, social worker or any other Legal Aid permanent or temporary employee representing our client at that moment

• Translate legal documents, and other material
• Transcribe and translate 911 Calls, Video and Audio Recordings, Wire Taps, etc.
• Transcribe and translate Discovery material
• Coordinate the provision of Foreign Language Services for other office staff
• Accompany attorneys, social workers or any other staff members in need of interpreting services to correctional facilities
• Go into field with investigators, attorneys, social workers, paralegals, or other staff to assist in interviewing clients, witnesses, etc.
• Work in other borough offices when needed
• Other duties as assigned

Queens - Criminal Defense Practice Office

• Master's Degree in the field of languages - Preferably in Linguistics, Translation, Spanish or English
• New York State or New Jersey Court Interpreting Certification or Experience a Plus
• Excellent organizational and computer skills (MS Office)
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work as part of a team
• Ability to work independently

SALARY TRANSPARENCY

The posting reflects the range of potential salaries for the role. The specific salary offers will be dependent on candidate qualifications, including collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.

Salary Range / Salary : $60,805 to $81,375

HIGHER EDUCATION AND LOAN FORGIVENESS

The Legal Aid Society is a qualified employer for the purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness. This position allows an employee to take advantage of PSLF and other State and Federal loan forgiveness programs.
