SUMMARY

The Safety Specialist is responsible for the development, implementation, and review of safety programs at the Port Wentworth location.

These programs can include but are not limited to LOTO, hazard communication, Industrial Hygiene, ergonomics, fall protection, and employee safety training.

The position also provides key support for risk reduction activities, risk assessments, management of change (MOC), and other internal inspections and audits.

Additionally, the Safety Specialist is the primary resource in reviewing / developing equipment standards (e.g., dust collectors, bucket elevators).

The position is responsible for maintaining excellent relationships with safety regulatory agencies and other appropriate third parties.

Salary : $68,000.00-$80,000.00

FUNCTIONS

Primary Responsibilities / Essential Functions

  • Maintain appropriate data and information systems
  • Report progress and problems to management, while being a leading in helping solve safety problems found.
  • Review and interpret occupational safety and health regulators and assist in determination of impact to the site / facility
  • Develop procedures and forms needed to manage all safety functions
  • Develop safety training materials, provide training, or arrange for the delivery of training for all safety functions
  • Develop and conduct site periodic safety inspections and follow up on corrective and preventive actions.
  • Work with other departments and onsite contractors to achieve regulatory compliance and safety targets
  • Coordinate communication of safety related information among employees, contractors, customers, and visitors
  • Provide key support for facility safety compliance programs such as LOTO, machine guarding, confined spaces, hot work and working at height etc.
  • Provide key support for facility incident investigations
  • Lead Safety Committee meetings

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support plant shutdowns and pre-startup activities
  • Research safety requirements associated with equipment standards being developed
  • Monitor compliance with permits and negotiates new permits when required
  • Audit and follow up on corrective actions on any areas of contractor non- compliance.

  • Understand and observe all Safety, Health & Environmental rules, and procedures
  • Report or correct any unsafe act or conditions
  • Report any chemical / fuel spill to supervision
  • Report any pain or discomfort to supervision

QUALIFICATIONS

Education / Professional Certifications / Licenses

The following are the basic qualifications :

  • 4-year degree; preferably in safety, health or environmental
  • Knowledge of safety and health regulations

The following are the preferred qualifications :

Professional certification / registration preferred (e.g., CSP)

Experience

The following are the basic qualifications :

  • Must have a least 3-5 years of successful experience in safety supervision in a manufacturing environment
  • Must have experience in LOTO, Confined Spaces, Hot Work, Working at Height requirements.

The following are the preferred qualifications :

  • Thorough understanding of relevant regulations and standards (e.g., OSHA, NFPA)
  • Demonstrated ability to produce measurable results

Working Conditions

Work climate varies from a quiet, climate-controlled, private cubicle to hot, noisy, physically demanding atmospheres that may be present during emergency situations or when conducting emergency drills.

Physical demands and work environmental characteristics described are representative of those that must be met or are encountered by an associate to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Must physically be able to access all areas of the manufacturing environment to perform audits, risk assessments and investigations.

Employee Supervision

No direct supervisory responsibilities. Team member can be assigned for specific assignments ranging throughout ranks of facility.
