Transcriptionist - Anatomical Pathology - Kings Hwy

This job accurately transcribes patient information and dictated descriptions for surgical, autopsy and other reports. Routes, scans and attaches reports to electronic case file, as well as pulls and files slides.

Performs general clerical duties for section and answers the telephone. Provides verbal reports to physicians and authorized personnel.

Constantly maintains strict confidentiality of patient related information.

Education

Required High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred Medical transcription educational courses

Work Experience

Required None

Preferred 1 year of clinical experience transcribing varying degrees of report types

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of required job information.
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout required job processes.
  • Skills to type 65 WPM to quickly and accurately type pathology reports.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, word processing, microcomputers and Transcription Software, like Dragon or MModal, to enter patient information and transcribe dictated medical reports into computer.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to interact courteously and effectively with a diverse group of internal and external contacts.
  • Strong organization skills to maintain an acceptable work flow and productivity level in an active office environment.
  • Basic analytical skills necessary to compile data and maintain files.
  • Must be self-directed with the ability to set priorities.

Job Duties

  • Accurately transcribes, proofreads, and distributes preliminary and final descriptions of autopsies within two days after receipt, recording all states of autopsy reports.
  • Accurately transcribes surgical reports, correspondence and memos using all available technology and in a timely fashion.
  • Identifies, investigates and corrects discrepancies between information supplied on pathology request slips by clinicians / surgeons and dictation of pathologists / residents / pathologist assistants.
  • Verifies patient ordering information, including demographics, to comply with Federal Regulations.
  • Accurately answers patients' diagnosis inquiries utilizing two patient identifiers and follows up on requests for diagnoses of unfinished reports, additional testing, slides or blocks for send out.
  • Reviews and follows current Ochsner Clinic Foundation and department standards for telephone courtesy and cooperativeness between departments.
  • Prepares and records conferences as scheduled or assigned, providing complete histories, slides, and final reports in a timeframe allowing ample time before conference for review and / or photographing by pathologists.
  • Pulls slides and blocks for in-house / community physicians, protocols, legal cases, consultation, second opinion, etc.

  • Outside slides and blocks received for review are recorded and returned to originating facility once final report is issued following department guidelines.
  • Other related duties as required.

Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and / or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly : activity or condition exists 2 / 3 or more of the time) to move objects.

Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work : (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree;

or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and / or pulling of arm or leg controls; and / or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and / or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.

NOTE : The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.

Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid or tissue and as part of their employment, incumbents are not called upon to perform or assist in emergency care or first aid.

There is no occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases.
