Job Summary / Basic Function About This Role :
The Assistant Director for Residence Life is an essential member of the central staff for Housing and Residence Life (HRL) and is responsible for the daily administration ofmultiple residential areas at a large public university.
The Assistant Director provides overall responsibility for the supervision and evaluation of live-in staff members (Complex Directors (CDs), Desk Assistants (DAs), and Resident Advisors RAs)).
The Assistant Director is responsible for the well-being of students in their area through the implementation and accountability of departmental protocol including the student conduct program, community development, staff selection, training, academic initiatives, student crisis response, and follow-up.
What You’ll Do Position Responsibilities
Staff Supervision :
- Select, train, supervise & evaluate full-time CDs.
- Oversee a comprehensive staffing plan for designated residential area which includes selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating RAs, and DAs.
- Coordinate weekly staff meetings with CDs at which information is communicated, ongoing training is offered, and team-building opportunities are provided.
- Conduct weekly or bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with CDs.
- Assistant Directors provide direction for the coordination of all student staff recruitment, hiring, administration, payroll, onboarding, and training.
- Conduct bi-monthly one-on-one meetings with RAs and DAs.
Staff Selection & Development :
Chair department-wide committee(s). Scope and charge will be provided by the Director of Housing and Residence Life or designee.
Committee assignments have included : Student Staff Selection; Student Staff Training; Residence Education.
- Participate in the Staff Selection, which is charged with recruiting and selecting motivated student leaders to fill Resident Assistant and Desk Assistant positions.
- Participate in the Staff Training & Development, which is charged with finding creative and engaging ways to make residence hall staff members competent to carry out the duties.
Community Development :
- Support and assist in the design and implementation of HRL student learning outcomes and HRL academic initiatives including supervision of academic resource centers, academic college partnerships, and summer academic programs.
- Oversight for Living Learning Theme Communities (LLTCs) in assigned area including communication with and guidance to LLTC advisors and coordinators.
Sponsor regular LLTC advisor events.
- Monitor and provide support and guidance in the implementation of a programming model put forth by HRL.
- In coordination with the Assistant Directors, develop, implement, and evaluate academic, social, and developmental programming support, insuring participation and coordination with academic and student services support when appropriate.
- Direct the follow-up and referrals on all students facing crises, such as health problems, suicide attempts, poor academic progress, etc.
- Create a culture of care by conducting ongoing risk assessments of residential students of concern, reporting issues and information to the CARE team
- Provide direction and support to Residence Housing Association (RHA), including supervision of RHA advisor and compensated executive council, oversight for RHA programs including risk management, budget guidance and reconciliation.
- Support the academic mission of Lamar University by developing a comprehensive academic model to foster student success.
- Attend programs and events, maintaining visibility throughout the hall community.
Administration / Hall Operations :
- Monitor and support the implementation of the student conduct program by their staff including review of cases, review of police reports, and follow up on students of concern reports, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with Office of Student Conduct
- Ensure proper administrative management in their area via training and implementation of room change protocol, accurate use of occupancy management software, and other tracking systems (in coordination with Assistant Director).
- Serve as a judicial hearing officer as needed.
- Facilitate the move-in, move-out, and room change processes.
- Process paperwork in a timely manner in accordance with all policies and procedures.
- Oversee compliance standards as charged by the Director of Housing & Residence Life.
- Issue violation notices and fine letters for housing and handbook violations.
- Oversee office / desk schedules to ensure appropriate coverage.
Facilities Management / Summer Responsibilities :
- Ensure residential operations and facilities task accountability in their area via training and implementation of security procedures, front desk protocol, and opening and closing procedures (in coordination with Assistant Directors).
- Act as a primary liaison to HRL in matters related to building operations within designated area.
- Conducting thorough room-to-room summer maintenance inspections, maintaining an accurate, working knowledge of room statuses throughout the summer
- Maintain open lines of communication with Facilities Management staff.
- Conduct fire drills in conjunction with Risk Management
- Execute summer responsibilities, which may include, but is not limited to providing area oversight to summer conference and camp management, summer school occupancy : assist with summer turnover processes : oversight of summer bridge or orientation programs : summer student staff training and developing best practices for summer conference management.
Other Duties / Responsibilities :
- Provide planning and budgetary direction and expenditure control for all specified accounts including training and implementing protocol for budget management
- Serve in on-call duty rotation with senior level staff. Respond to crisis or emergency situations. Provide guidance to HRL staff members and students, in coordination with senior level staff, disseminate critical messages relating to the health / safety and service delivery to customers specifically when on duty.
- Assist with department-wide responsibilities such as orientation programs, Homecoming, recruitment, and marketing events.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures in collaboration with the Director of Residence Life
- Serve on various committees as requested or approved by the Director of Residence Life
- Represent the University and department at various conferences and meetings as required.
- Provide functional guidance and leadership of the department in individually specified areas, (e.g., admissions, conferences, orientation.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Residence Life
Principle Duties and Responsibilities
Assist with the evacuation process of residence students to an off-site location for tropical storm or hurricane. This position is classified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act and a responsible employee under Title IX.
Other duties may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to needs of the university. This is a live-out professional position.

- Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education or a related field is required is required.
- Two years full-time professional experience in working in a Housing and / or Residence Life program in higher education.
- Previous experience as a live-in housing professional staff member is required.
- Demonstrated written and verbal communications skills are necessary.
- Familiarity with word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs is required
