Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Environmental Toxicology department chair and chief administrative officer, but also working with a high degree of autonomy, develops, implements and maintains comprehensive safety programs within the department and the Metro administrative cluster.

This includes research laboratories, teaching laboratories, offices, facilities, shops, and field research areas by department personnel on and off campus.

The primary goals of this position are to prevent occupational injuries and illnesses from various risk factors in working environments and to maintain a comprehensive safety program.

This includes providing technical guidance and training to faculty, laboratory and field researchers, staff, and students in the implementation of appropriate safety procedures.

The incumbent monitors department activities for compliance with health and safety regulations and provides lab supervisors with recommendations and guidance for keeping their facilities in compliance with these requirements.

Provides recommendations for field safety plans and oversees space renovation projects for compliance with fire regulations and safety requirements.

Tests department equipment necessary to disinfect pathogens before disposal of waste. Directs initial response in emergency situations and functions as primary after-hours emergency contact and departmental liaison with Police, Fire, EH&S and county, state and federal agencies.

Minimum Qualifications

• B.S. degree in agricultural, environmental, life or physical sciences or comparable related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge and understanding of state requirements for IIPP, EAP, CHP and laboratory safety standards and OSHA safety requirements.
• Knowledge and understanding of lab, field and chemical safety and applicable campus policies regarding safety, handling storage, disposal and record keeping of hazardous and toxic chemicals, lab supplies and other materials and to conduct and coordinate safety audits, investigations, and evaluation and achieve corrective action.
• Knowledge of equipment and skills to assist others in the use, maintenance and troubleshooting of departmental lab instruments and computers.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to establish and maintain professional relationships, and effectively interact and communicate with a diverse group of people including faculty, professional staff, students, visiting researchers, and the university community at large and ability to diplomatically give and receive directions, information, and knowledge to and from faculty, staff, students, staff, affiliates and visitors.
• Ability to work independently, collectively and collaboratively in a team environment and to organize and apply time management skills to determine relative priorities of conflicting requests and meet deadlines with frequent changes in work priority, scope and schedule.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certifications in campus safety and radiation use
• Experience with facilities management, to understand and interpret technical drawings, specifications and campus standards.
• Experience using campus applications such as UC Chemicals, Inspect, LHAT, Profile WASTe, AggieEnterprise, AggieLogistics, AggieExpense, and FacilitieLink.
• Experience using Microsoft Office and Adobe software (Word, Excel, Access, Acrobat Pro, etc.)
• Experience designing experiments and writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Experience maintaining and troubleshooting lab equipment and facilities.
• Knowledge of university, state, and federal laboratory, field, animal, and safety regulations and requirements.

Department Overview

This position functions as the Department Safety Coordinator for the department of Environmental Toxicology and Metro Cluster, which requires the use of applicable EH&S concepts to implement a safety program applicable to a variety of campus infrastructures and department.

Works with safety professionals in EH&S and applies professional level knowledge of subject. This position also serves as the primary laboratory manager and the primary contact for departmental autoclave and equipment maintenance.

Work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment and for following the defined policies and procedures. Decision-making considers established procedures, relevant laws, regulations, and campus policy.
