THIS IS A PART-TIME POSITION)

Under the general supervision of the Chief Medical Officer, the Physician Assistant (Advanced Practice Provider) will perform clinical duties and activities as directed.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Provides direct clinical / patient care duties and responsibilities as required, including psychiatric evaluations, re-evaluations, dispositions, coordination of medical services with nurse on duty, medication orders / prescribing, monitoring patients, etc.
  • Obtains detailed history and develops patient care charts; performs physical examinations and evaluations on assigned patients;

assesses and treats medical problems and provides direct patient care to a specified patient population.

  • Notifies attending physician on call, house physician on call, or supervising physician regarding any unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation.
  • Practices safety, environmental, and / or infection control methods.
  • Supervises and / or coordinates the activities of patient care and support staff within the clinic.
  • Writes progress notes on patients' charts indicating patient status and treatment procedures.
  • Provides health education to patients, families and / or community health practitioners and groups.
  • Trains and supervises clinical staff engaged in specific clinical activities.
  • Performs clinical research related to specific operations.
  • Examines patients, diagnoses illnesses, and provides treatment.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests.
  • Gathers health histories, performs physical examinations and diagnostic procedures.
  • Develops and implements treatment plans.
  • Documents all patient interactions.
  • Notifies managing physician about unusual or unexpected events or problems.
  • Orders, performs, and interprets routine laboratory tests.
  • Consults with patients in clinic settings and / or refers patients to department physicians, other specialists, and medical and community resources as necessary.
  • Prescribes medications based on patient's medical diagnosis and needs.
  • Provides education and instruction on patient's condition(s) as required.
  • Directs other medical personnel in the execution of patient care.
  • Provides immediate evaluation, treatment, and institution of procedures essential to providing appropriate response to emergency medical problems.
  • Provides complete physical examinations.
  • Interprets lab results.
  • Provides teaching and counseling to support healthy lifestyle behaviors.
  • Refers patients to other health professionals as needed.
  • Determines, plans, and initiates appropriate treatment, and adjusts treatment if necessary.
  • Documents medical information of patients and maintains electronic medical records.
  • Maintains knowledge of current medical research and trends.
  • Supports research projects.
  • Monitors and operates medical equipment.
  • Diagnoses health issues.
  • Incorporates Evidenced Based Best Practice Standards into service delivery.
  • Provides care compliant with licensing regulations and accreditation standards.
  • Determines medical necessity.
  • Researches medical topics such as psychotropic medication, psychiatric evaluation, coordination of care, etc.
  • Supervises coordination of care activities.
  • Directs discharge planning.
  • Completes clinical documentation as required.
  • Provides supervision and direction to the mobile crisis team.
  • Reviews Eligibility assessments for members contacting the Crisis Care Center.
  • Participates in clinical and administrative meetings.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance reviews.
  • Collaborates and discusses cases with psychiatrist.
  • Collaborates with an interdisciplinary team to continuously improve productivity, efficiency, recovery outcomes, and medical care.
  • Ensures appropriate responses to all medical emergencies.
  • Provides clinical coverage and consultation on any urgent clinical issue that may arise between the time that members contact the Crisis Care Center and / or Mobile Crisis Teams and until they are seen by our Clinically Responsible Service Providers.
  • Attends shift handover meetings.
  • Identifies and timely reports any health and safety risks, accidents, incidents, injuries, and property damage at the workplace.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA'S) :

  • Knowledge of DWIHN policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Knowledge of the DWIHN provider network and community resources.
  • Knowledge of the Michigan Mental Health Code.
  • Knowledge of MDHHS policies, rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Federal policies, rules, regulations, and procedures as it relates to DWIHN.
  • Knowledge of comprehension of psychiatric care.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric medications and their indications, common side effects, reactions, and interactions of medications prescribed.
  • Knowledge and ability to work with agitated patients in crisis and their families to implement behavioral management interventions.
  • Knowledge of the clinical care process (screening, assessment, treatment planning, case management, and continuing care).
  • Knowledge of and ability to use screening and assessment tools for behavioral health services.
  • Knowledge of medical and behavioral health practices and terminology.
  • Knowledge of behavioral health case management practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of Evidence Based Practices for the behavioral health field.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use treatment planning, case management, and continuing care for behavioral health services.
  • Knowledge of diagnostics, psychopharmacology, and supportive treatment approaches as applied to a severely mentally ill (SMI) population.
  • Knowledge of Medicaid, local, regional, and national codes, laws, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of compliance standards.
  • Knowledge of clinical assessment principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of clinical licensure in the State of Michigan.
  • Knowledge of the DSM-V Statistical Manual.
  • Clinical documentation skills.

REQUIRED EDUCATION :

A Bachelor's Degree, completion of an AMA-approved Physician Assistant program.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE :

Two (2) years of professional clinical experience in a behavioral healthcare or mental health setting.

REQUIRED LICENSES :

Licensure as a Physician Assistant.

Continuing certification from the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants.

A valid State of Michigan Driver's License with a safe and acceptable driving record.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS :

Required DEA License and BLS certification.

THIS IS A PART-TIME POSITION)

WORKING CONDITIONS :

Work is usually performed at the Crisis Care Center but may require the employee to drive to different sites throughout Wayne County and the State of Michigan.
