Position : Director of Annual Giving

Job Classification : Exempt, full-time

Work Schedule : 40 hours per week, occasional early mornings, evenings, and / or weekends.

Reporting Relationship : Vice President of Development & Marketing (VPDM)

Primary Accountabilities :

The primary function of the Director of Annual Giving (DAG) is direct donor engagement, relationship building, and management of your own portfolio through the cycle of identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.

Working closely with the VPDM, you will be the team lead in planning, implementing, and evaluating a variety of strategies within the Development Department of Capper Foundation for annual, campaign, and special gifts.

The DAG has an impact on all areas of the organization by upholding the highest ethical standards, building relationships, and securing donations that are both meaningful to the donors and that support the goals of CF.

Major Duties :

  • Manage a personal portfolio of donors giving up to $15,000 range, with opportunity to grow to higher level gifts with successful management of initial portfolio.
  • Build relationships, cultivate, solicit, and effectively steward existing donors for annual, campaign and special gifts.
  • Identify and qualify prospective donors, build relationships, and engage to effectively acquire and solicit new donors.
  • Identify and strategically solicit current and prospective donors who are qualified as Planned Gift prospects for the Capper Heritage Society.
  • Develop and implement written stewardship plans to build donor relationships and retain their commitment of support, including legacy estate gifts.
  • Team leadership
  • Coordinate closely with the VPDM to advance the work of the development team, as well as the personal portfolios of the VPDM and the President & CEO.
  • Work as part of the Development team to design strategic and operational plans, coordinate team efforts to ensure progress and achieve goals.
  • Lead strategies to secure gifts and donor acquisition through Events, Giving Tuesday and Year End giving including strategies for continued engagement and retention.
  • Robust Reporting, Evaluation, and Preservation of Information
  • Create personalized Donor Impact Reports illustrating the use of gifts, results achieved and impact on persons served.
  • Enter reports of donor contacts into donor records database, Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge, and share with VPDM and development team.
  • Coordinate closely with the Development Services Specialist to :
  • Provide information to ensure accurate reporting of donor gifts and cultivation activities.
  • Produce accurate analytical reports and donor queries to assess the effectiveness of development activities and to review trends and year-end comparisons.
  • Recommend a variety of formulas to produce a targeted list of constituents for invitation lists and direct marketing appeals.
  • Maintain and update constituent records in the CF donor database, including entering donor research and cultivation notes for use in all development functions.
  • Recommend software and hardware updates and enhancement to the VPDM.

  • Participate in special events as needed, build relationships with event guests, and develop strategies for continued connections.
  • Support the CF and its activities.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Three (3) years of fundraising experience or related relationship management / relational sales experience required.
  • Planned giving experience preferred.
  • Committed to the ethos of the nonprofit sector.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the role of development in a not-for-profit human service organization.
  • Possesses a strong ethical compass and upholds the organization's values in all interactions with donors. Adheres to the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Code of Ethics and Donor Bill of Rights.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn and utilize related evolving technology as assigned.
  • Read, write and speak fluent English. Secondary language skills are not required but beneficial.
  • Must pass background checks and drug test per CF procedures.
  • Valid Kansas Driver’s License.
  • Willing to perform some travel within the State of Kansas and very occasional out of state travel.

Physical Demands :

  • Regularly required to speak and hear.
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach and use hands.
  • Ability to read computer screens for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to lift up to thirty (30) pounds.

  • This position may occasionally have direct contact with individuals who have physical and / or developmental disabilities and who may exhibit unpredictable behavior and uncontrollable outbursts.
  • This position requires utmost confidentiality regarding CF clients, particularly in accordance with HIPAA compliance; organizational practices, policies, and records; and donor information.
  • Appropriate dress code is enforced respective to the employee’s role.
