ABOUT THE ROLE

At Torch, we are looking for a talented Engineering Manager who has experience developing web systems from the ground up and is passionate about doing work that matters.

The Engineering Manager works alongside technology and product leadership to ship a high quality, engaging digital coaching platform using technologies and engineering processes.

This role is crucial in continuing to build and sustain a world-class engineering culture - one which provides team members open and supportive leadership and a clear path for growth both personally and as a group.

This role requires a leader who can inspire and mentor a team of talented engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, precision, and collaboration.

The ideal candidate will bring both technical expertise and strategic insight, driving the team to deliver results that align with Torch's overarching goals of growth and customer satisfaction.

YOUR POSITION

  • Collaborate with product teams to design and build creative solutions, enabling personal growth for our clients while empowering our coaches.
  • Guide discussions of architecture, technical debt, and long-term technical strategy.
  • Lead and mentor a team of onsite and offshore engineers, by establishing and maintaining high technical and professional standards.
  • Help to create scalable, high-performance web applications consumable on various device form factors.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for frontend technology, in alignment with the company's overall goals.
  • Establish and maintain design systems and component libraries to promote consistency and efficiency across applications.
  • Collaborate with UX / UI designers to implement responsive and intuitive interfaces that meet user needs and business objectives.
  • Uphold high standards in code quality and system reliability through peer code reviews and advocating for best practices in software development.
  • Provide focus and direction by driving execution on some of our highest priority projects.
  • Willingness to be hands-on and support your team whenever necessary whether coding, debugging, or testing new product features.

YOUR EXPERIENCE - Basic Requirements

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, plus a degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or other STEM area.
  • 3+ years leading an agile software development team.
  • 5+ years experience developing complex front-end applications using modern frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js.
  • Experience integrating and leveraging LLMs to enhance product functionality and user experiences, including natural language processing, recommendation systems, or other AI-driven functionalities.
  • Experience in responsive design and cross-browser compatibility issues, ensuring consistent user experiences across different devices and browsers.
  • Experience with component-driven development and proficiency in tools like Storybook for building and maintaining design systems.
  • Skilled in building and utilizing RESTful and GraphQL web services.
  • Proficiency with Git and cloud technologies in AWS.
  • Comprehensive understanding of various testing methodologies, ensuring thorough coverage and high-quality user experiences.
  • Understanding of distributed application design patterns and asynchronous programming models.
  • Familiar with both relational and non-relational databases.
  • Knowledge of security best practices and adherence to data protection regulations.

INTERVIEW PROCESS

  • Technical Interview with the CTO (45 minutes) and a Principal Engineer (45 minutes).
  • Interview with an Engineering Team member (45 minutes) focusing on experience working with cross-functional teams, integration of product development processes, and managing engineering teams.
  • Design / Coding Session (60 minutes) to assess problem-solving skills and technical proficiency.
  • Leadership / Cultural Fit Interview with the CEO (45 minutes).

$160,000 - $200,000 a year
