Position Focus :
The Yale University Art Gallery (YUAG) seeks to fill a position of Associate Curator responsible for oversight of some aspect of the Gallery’s collection of art from the Ancient Mediterranean, Ancient Near East, or Ancient Americas.
- The Associate Curator, reporting to the Chief Curator and Curator of European Art, will take an active role in planning exhibitions, programs, and publications;
- direct conservation projects and gallery installations; lecture on aspects of the Department’s holdings; initiate research on acquisitions, loans, and on the permanent collection;
field public inquiries; and assume stewardship and donor cultivation responsibilities. It is expected that they will work closely with the other curatorial departments when appropriate and will have an interest in the teaching goals of the Gallery.
Conceive and implement exhibitions, publications, and interpretive projects designed to promote knowledge of the collection, including public programs, wall texts and labels, brochures and instructional ephemera, electronic records, and permanent collection catalogues.
Research and execute proposals for acquisitions through gift and purchase. Contribute to and assist in the maintenance of the collection database and its accessibility through YUAG’s website;
assure the correctness, completeness, and dissemination of provenance information about works of art in the department’s care.
Facilitate access to works of art and collection storage for faculty, students, and visiting scholars; assist with oversight of the maintenance and conservation of the collection.
In collaboration with Conservation, evaluate the suitability of loan requests and perform courier duties as necessary. Assist with fundraising for exhibitions, acquisitions, and departmental projects.
Assist with stewardship of the YUAG Governing Board, donors, collectors, students, and faculty. Serve on internal committees and represent the museums and University to local, national, and international communities to promote the institution and its collection.
Additional duties of teaching, publishing, and lecturing in the candidate’s area of expertise are strongly encouraged, with particular emphasis given to collaborating with museum colleagues, Yale faculty and colleagues at other Yale museums, students, and local communities.
Other projects and travel as requested by the Art Gallery.
Essential Duties
1. Initiates, plans and organizes exhibitions of the collection. 2. Determines the organization and housing of a collection.
3. Determines conservation priorities. 4. Recommends acquisitions for the collection and evaluates aesthetic and historical interest, prevailing market conditions and their significance in relation to the strengths and weaknesses of the collection.
5. Initiates the scholarly cataloging of objects in the collection. 6. Determines and recommends which objects can be loaned.
7. Writes publications on the collection and catalogues for exhibitions. 8. Plans and teaches courses in the appropriate discipline.
9. Fundraises and drafts grant proposals for the collection. 10. May supervise staff of exempt and non-exempt employees.
11. Prepares gallery talks, classes and public lectures. Represent the University to the outside community to promote the collection and solicit gifts.
12. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Master’s Degree in Art History and four years of curatorial experience or an equivalent education and experience.

Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. An effective collaborator both within the department and in the larger YUAG environments, with a positive attitude that supports the University’s goals in teaching, research, and advancement of knowledge.
Required Skill / Ability 3 :
Proven ability to conduct original research, to write lucidly, and to communicate effectively among diverse audiences.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills :
Ph.D. degree in art history or related field and at least five years of museum experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated expertise in one aspect of the department’s holdings in the arts of the Ancient Mediterranean, Ancient Near East, or Ancient Americas as well as a broad interest in the arts, archaeology, and cultures of the Ancient world broadly
