At Houston Methodist the Medical LaboratoryScientist position is responsible for performing both routine andcomplex analyses which necessitates knowledge of laboratorytechniques principles and equipment and their interrelationship.

This position exercises good judgment by using critical thinkingskills and deals with issue resolution concerning the daytodaytechnical operation of the laboratory.

The Medical LaboratoryScientist also ensures that specimens are accessioned and processedexpeditiously in order to deliver quality laboratory results in aneffective and costefficientmanner.

PEOPLE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Promotes apositive work environment and contributes to a dynamic team focusedwork unit that actively helps one another to achieve optimaldepartment results.

Collaborates with all members of the patientcare team by actively communicating and reporting pertinent patientcare information and data in a comprehensivemanner.

  • Teaches studentsnew employees and others as assigned byManager.
  • Participates inlaboratory and organization wideinitiatives.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performsqualitative and quantitative tests and examination using variousanalyzers and / or manualmethods.
  • Organizesworkload and sets priorities. Utilizes all available work time byassisting others and performing additionaltasks.
  • Meets turnaroundtime expectations as defined bymanagement

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Demonstrates thesix elements of competency for test systems used to generatepatient test results in all areas assigned towork.
  • Recognizesinvestigates and helps resolve test discrepancies. When problemsarise takes appropriate action to investigate and address andnotifies management and the medical director forfollowup.
  • Performsinstrument calibrations validations quality control testingmaintenance and functionchecks.

FINANCE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

  • Adjusts workschedule to accommodate departmental / organizational needs.Appropriately utilizes the time recordingsystem.
  • Uses resourcesefficiently; does not waste supplies. Restocks section inventorylevels asneeded

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Seeksopportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies witha focus on continualdevelopment.
  • Reviews andutilizes Standard Operating Procedure and offers suggestions forimprovement

WORKEXPERIENCE

One year of workor training experience in a hospital laboratorypreferred

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Mustmeet certification eligibility upon entry into this role and haveone of the following required certifications within 18 months :
  • Preferred Certified as a MedicalTechnologist Clinical Laboratory Scientist Medical LaboratoryScientist or categorical certification by Board of Certification(ASCP)
  • Certified as a MedicalTechnologist by American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • Certified as a Clinical LaboratoryScientist by National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel(NCA)
  • HLA only One of thefollowing is required :

Medical TechnologistMT(ASCP) or Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS(ASCP) certification

Certified by American Board ofHistocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI)

Microbiology only One of the following is required :

Medical Technologist MT(ASCP) or MedicalLaboratory Scientist MLS(ASCP) certification

Microbiology M(ASCP) certification

Clinicalmicrobiology registry from American Society for MicrobiologyRM(AAM)

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ANDABILITIES
