Position Summary : The Social Services Manager for the Metro Detroit Area Command (MDAC) works directly within the Metro Detroit area to plan, implement, oversee, and coordinate all aspects of social service activities within the Metro Detroit area.
The Social Services Manager for the Metro Detroit Area Command reports to the Metro Detroit Area Commander at the Great Lakes Divisional Headquarters (GLD).
The Manager also interacts with the Executive Director of Social Services at GLD to ensure that MDAC social services align with divisional mission and strategy.
Essential Responsibilities :
- Provide assistance to metro corps officers and social services staff in program and policy planning and development, problem solving, and other consultation as needed.
- Participate in hiring and training of case workers and managers when requested.
- Provide input regarding professional development classes / trainings for corps social services staff within MDAC.
- Support regular meetings and in-service training for corps social services staff.
- Act as liaison between MDAC Corps and DHQ to ensure statistics are entered correctly.
- Coordinate logistics for resources / donations that come into MDAC (with support from other departments as appropriate).
- Oversee special and seasonal projects benefiting the Metro Detroit area, including procurement and distribution of coats, toys, food boxes, and gift cards during Christmas season.
- Identify community resources and cooperate with collateral agencies.
- Support service integration and cross referral between Salvation Army programs as needed and appropriate.
- Act as liaison between relevant GLD personnel to ensure programs follow divisional processes (e.g., with Senior Director of Homeless Services for shelter evaluations, etc.)
- Provide technical support to Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) for MDAC Corps.
- Support the GLD Social Services department in the coordination of program reviews within the Metro Detroit area.
- Participate in the development of annual Divisional Social Services Seminar, as requested by the EDSS.
- Attend GLD monthly meetings with Divisional Social Services Directors and Area Command Managers.
- Represent MDAC social ministries at the Metro Detroit Advisory Board and Metro Detroit Coordinating meetings.
- Represent The Salvation Army on Metro Detroit area boards, task forces, committees, and coalitions in consultation with the Area Commander and Executive Director of Social Services.
- Maintain and improve relationships between The Salvation Army social services and City of Detroit (e.g., attending pertinent community meetings, etc.)
- Engage key stakeholders (such as the City of Detroit and Corps Officers) in collaboration around strategic initiatives.
- Coordinate with grant writer(s) for program-specific grant applications.
- Participate in Metro Detroit Area Command fundraising and community relations events as requested by the Area Commander.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications : Ability to work collaboratively with a wide variety of stakeholders, provide solution-focused consultation / technical assistance, and engage in strategic thinking.
Ability to manage multiple projects, including developing budgets and managing spending within approved budgets. Must be highly organized, motivated, and a self-starter.
Education / Experience :
- Bachelor's degree in social work or related field, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
- 5 years of experience in the supervision of comparable social service programs that offer multi-faceted casework / case management interventions utilizing a strength-based and trauma informed care best practices approach.
- Broad knowledge of social work principles and experience with low-income populations

- Maintain client confidentiality and obtain appropriate releases of information.
- Demonstrate a continued effort to increase self-awareness and to better understand other cultures and issues of social justice and promote racial understanding and reconciliation.
- Complete Caseworker Certification program within 120 days of hire.
Computer Skills :
- Proficient in Microsoft Office 365
- Working knowledge of TEAMS and SharePoint
- Proficient in SIMS (ServicePoint) software within 90 days
- Willingness to learn new software as needed
Certificates and Licenses :
- Licensed Bachelor of Social Work
- Complete Safe From Harm training, and keep current as needed
- Must have and maintain a current valid driver's license and pass the Salvation Army Motor Vehicle Record check (MVR)
