POSITION OVERVIEW :
Responsible for leading and inspiring a team of lawyers who provide legal services for Hanover’s claim organization, including providing legal advice on insurance coverage and claims-handling issues, managing claims-related litigation against the Company, and other services for the purpose of mitigating the legal, financial, and reputational risks that may arise from the Company’s claim operations.
Reports directly to the VP, Claim Legal Services within Hanover’s claim organization.
IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL :
Effectively lead a legal practice group within Hanover’s claim organization that provides the following legal services :
Render legal advice and opinions to claims handlers on coverage issues arising from Hanover’s property and casualty insurance contracts, including auto and general liability, specialty and first party property coverages.
May prepare coverage position letters on selected high complexity / exposure claims.
- Partner with claim handlers and their leaders to develop legal strategies that optimally resolve claim disputes.
- Manage claim-related litigation against the company alleging extra-contractual liability, including complex institutional and electronic discovery matters.
- Prepare or coordinate responses to a subset of high-risk subpoenas for the Company’s records.
- General legal counselling on a myriad of claims issues that pose legal, financial, or reputational risk for the Company.
- Collaborates with underwriting and product areas to provide insights to improve the Company’s insurance products.
- May be expected to maintain their own reduced caseload.
WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY :
- JD degree and admitted to the practice of law in at least one US jurisdiction.
- Strong and demonstrated leadership capabilities.
- Advanced knowledge and substantial experience in P&C insurance and extracontractual law
- Experience preparing opinions and analyses on coverage and extra-contractual issues arising under property casualty insurance policies either within a law firm or in house for a property and casualty insurer.
- Experience litigating insurance coverage and related bad faith disputes either in private practice or in house for a property / casualty insurer.
- Responding to subpoenas seeking the company’s records
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team framework.
- Demonstrated effective coaching and development skills, change resiliency and flexibility.
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and clients and maintain composure and respect for others in stressful situations.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Computer literacy, including proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and keyboarding skills.
- Familiarity with legal principles and court rules governing discovery, and e-discovery.
- Skilled at time management and organizing work.
