GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION :
Pacific University Media Arts Department is seeking a dynamic and experienced Adjunct Graphic Design Instructor to teach two face-to-face courses during the 2024-2025 academic year.
The successful candidate will teach one section of Publication and Editing Design in the Fall semester and one section of Digital Imaging in the Spring semester.
We will also consider applications for one of the courses.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Provide high-quality academic instruction for assigned courses.
- Develop and design engaging assignments and projects that align with course objectives.
- Deliver lectures, facilitate discussions, and lead hands-on activities.
- Provide constructive feedback and mentorship to students.
- Evaluate and assess student work.
- Maintain office hours to support student learning and development.
- Stay current with developments in graphic design, digital imaging, and related technologies.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS :
- Develop a clear course syllabus with learning outcomes, grading policies, due dates, and assigned readings
- Work with the department Chair to obtain any materials and supplies to support all courses.
- Collaborate with fellow colleagues in the department to support a robust design program.
- Work within a pre-determined operating budget.
JOB SCOPE :
This position is primarily responsible for the effective teaching of courses in Graphic Design and, therefore, developing the content and expectations for those courses, attending class meetings, and supporting student learning.
SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY :
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE :
Master’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, or a related field, or professional experience.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & BEHAVIORS :
- Communicates with students, faculty, staff and the public appropriate to the age of the individual served.
- Builds on basic learning and carries it from one situation to another.
- Demonstrates critical thinking skills in problem solving and decision-making.
- Asks questions and seeks assistance.
- Takes responsibility to eliminate the source of problems.
- Demonstrates confidentiality regarding information pertaining to all students, faculty and staff.
- Maintains proper appearance and personal conduct for the employee’s particular job.
- Uses effective communication skills taking into consideration body language, filters, listening, paraphrasing, and questions with customers of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
- Demonstrates ability to work in a team environment.
- Demonstrated expertise in publication design, editorial design, digital imaging, digital photography, and digital illustration.
- Prior teaching experience at the college level is preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment.
- Proficiency with design software such as the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
WORKING CONDITIONS :
Courses will be taught in a Macintosh-based computer lab with faculty and student work stations. No travel is required as part of the position, but field trips with students are possible at the instructor's discretion.
