Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the department management, the Facilities Mechanic - Physical Plant Equipment is responsible for providing support to properties managed by UCLA Housing & Hospitality Services.

The incumbent performs semi-skilled maintenance tasks on a regular and continuous basis including plumbing, mechanical and electrical repairs not requiring a licensed technician.

Diagnose and repair plumbing equipment including pipes, fittings, couplings, valves, pressure regulators, gas regulators, and solar panels.

The position will perform miscellaneous repairs as necessary and will need to operate a university vehicle and travel to various locations for transporting equipment and completing maintenance repairs.

Perform mechanical repairs including work on fans and motors, heat exchangers, and other miscellaneous mechanical equipment.

Diagnose and repair various electrical equipment including automatic controls, electrical fixtures, ballasts, switches, thermostats, and other electrical equipment.

Complete preventative maintenance and work order forms. Complete other duties as assigned.

Salary & Compensation

UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

Qualifications

  • 2 years Experience working on heating, ventilation and refrigeration equipment, water conditioning systems, water distribution systems & pumps. (Required) Or
  • 2 years Experience working on electrical motors and distribution systems including function, operation and servicing procedures. (Required) Or
  • 2 years Combination of education and experience working with HVAC equipment. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of plumbing procedures, including pipe and device repair and replacement. Demonstrated ability to independently perform semi-skilled plumbing, electrical, mechanical and carpentry repairs. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of 120 / 208v electrical systems including minor automatic controls. Ability to distinguish amongst colors. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of mechanical components including motors and fans. Ability to read and understand plumbing and electrical diagrams and work orders.

Working knowledge of a personal computer and related software. (Required)

  • General knowledge of low pressure steam boilers. General knowledge of energy management procedures. (Preferred)
  • Ability to correctly and skillfully operate various standard, hand- power tools and equipment to include voltage meter, multimeter, hand drills, electrical snakes, saws, grinders and roto hammers. (Required)
  • Skill in performing basic arithmetic calculations sufficient to calculate work areas and materials. (Required)
  • Oral communication skills to obtain or convey clear, concise and grammatically correct information. Skill in writing simple English phrases using correct grammar and spelling to complete reports that are accurate and easy to comprehend.

Skill in reading, understanding and interpreting administrative policy and procedure manuals. (Required)

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, managers, student residents, guests and contractors. (Required)
  • Skill in prioritizing assignments when there are changes in workload and / or competing deadlines. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and follow through on assignments. (Required)
  • Ability to stand, crawl, walk and stoop, push, pull and lift / lower objects weighing up to 50lbs from floor to waist high and rotate upper torso.

Ability to lift material and parts, up to 50 pounds, from shoulder to above head while standing on a ladder. Ability to work in dirty and noisy conditions, in wet or humid weather and in fluctuating and / or extreme temperatures. (Required)

Ability to operate university vehicle for transporting equipment and completing repairs in the course of duties. Working knowledge of standard safety practices and methods.

Ability to work overtime, weekends and various work shifts. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Universal certificate from EPA for handling, purchasing and recovering CFC's and HCFC's Current (Preferred)
  • California Driver's License Current (Required)
