Smartwool Product Developer
What will you do?
A day in the life of a Product Developer at Smartwool looks a little like this.
The Smartwool Apparel Product Developer manages a portion of the product line from concept through production ready Tech Packs;
through organization and review of inbound garments, commenting on construction, factory communication and entry of system data.
Responsible for maintaining global office / factory relationships, BOM accuracy, deadline tracking, and SMS discrepancy lists.
This role reports to the Smartwool Development Manager for Apparel & Accessories.
Let’s break down that day-in-the-life a bit more.
- Work cross-functionally with Developers, Technical Developer, Designers, Costing Manager, Materials Manager, Product Integrity Manager, Merchandisers, Operations, and Manufacturers to facilitate a smooth communication flow.
- Set-up 3D Virtual Proto files by adding materials, trims, etc.
- Comment on the construction of protos to then communicate changes effectively to Manufacturers.
- Ownership of garment and TP, keeping constant communication with Technical Developer to ensure fit comments are included for TP release.
- Maintain BOM accuracy for all styles within each season.
- Enter packaging into BOMs and work cross-functionally with packaging team.
- Work cross-functionally with Designers to maintain sketch accuracy for all styles within each season.
- Awareness of margin status throughout the development process.
- Review samples for material and trim accuracy.
- Manage Construction / Thread Specs for prototype development.
- Enter style attributes into PLM system and support on Workbook proofing.
- Development of the following product categories : C&S inline product, SMUs / Collabs.
- Supports team members when workload intensity shifts.
What do you need to succeed?
We all have unique skills that we bring to work and celebrate every day. For this role, there are foundation skills you’ll need to succeed and excel.
Additionally, while formal education in Apparel or Manufacturing is great to have, we are most interested in your 2-5 years of experience and professional achievements.
The foundation skills you will need in this position are :
- Demonstrates a knowledge of construction and of manufacturing processes
- Demonstrates a knowledge of product categories, product materials, and product development lifecycle
- Demonstrates clear and accurate, verbal and written communication; and performance history with offshore vendors and manufacturers
- Ability to manage multiple seasonal calendars in a fast paced and dynamic environment
- Demonstrates proficient computer skills in MS Office software, Adobe Illustrator, and PLM program
- Demonstrates attention to details
- Demonstrates strong organizational and problem-solving skills
- Ability to travel domestically and overseas, as needed
There are also a few skills that are not required but preferred.
- Knit and Wool experience
- Knowledge of patternmaking
- 3D Proto Software experience

Hiring Range :
$69,984.00 USD - $87,480.00 USD annually
Incentive Potential : This position is eligible for additional compensation awards that may include an annual incentive plan, sales incentive, or commission potential.
Specific details of the additional compensation eligibility for this position will be provided during the recruiting and interview process.
