Essential Job Duties Living and Learning Villages are communities within University Housing residential spaces where students, staff, and / or faculty engage in programs that are tailored to Village-specific content and strategies.

Villages provide students with the opportunity to connect with other NC State community members who share a common interest or lived experience through curricular and co-curricular programs.

As partnership-focused professionals, Village Program Directors collaborate with offices, departments, and colleges all across NC State to ensure that students within these specialized communities have access to the best our campus has to offer.

Arts Village Overview : A Living and Learning Village is a place where students, staff, and faculty are engaged around common learning outcomes and interests to Think and Do in a shared residential environment.

Villages provide connected curricular and co-curricular experiences to foster a sense of belonging, cultivate an intellectually enriching environment , and support the development of the whole student.

As content-area professionals, Village Directors sustain all aspects of the program’s day-to-day operations, programmatic leadership and long-term vision and strategic planning for Village enhancement and growth.

As one of our 15 Living and Learning Programs, the Arts Village is a dynamic community created in collaboration with Arts NC State that unites students from various personal and academic backgrounds who have a passion for the arts and continues their exploration of broadly defined arts disciplines.

The Arts Village educates and develops the whole person through developing students’ creativity and engagement with arts on campus and in the broader community.

The goal of the Arts Village is for students to continue their development in and through the arts well after they leave NC State, becoming art-engaged active citizens.

The Arts Village Director is the strategic lead bringing this community to life in close alignment with Arts NC State and other partners.

The Arts Village Director teaches the Arts Village Forum (AVS 100) linked 1-credit hour experiential course to immerse students in the cultural life of the NC State campus and surrounding community.

Students deepen their knowledge through learning and engagement in various art forms and the creation of an original artwork for a capstone project.

The course offers direct experience with multiple arts events through visual and performing arts programs of Arts NC State.

Reporting Structure : The Village Director formally reports to the Director, Residential Learning, and will also have communication and engagement expectations to the Executive Director of Arts NC State as identified within a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

Position Duties & Responsibilities : The Village Director will be responsible for the following primary duties :

Village Mission & Student Development

  • In collaboration with the Residence Life team, cultivate intentional interactions connected to the residential experience and education model.
  • Assess the Village experience operationally and from the student perspective.
  • Maintain high visibility in the community by holding office hours, attending events, and through daily interactions that foster positive relationships.

Help develop a sense of belonging and connectedness within both the Village community and the NC State University community.

  • Throughout the academic year, develop and implement learning outcome-specific programs and experiential learning opportunities that align with the residential experience and education model, Village mission, and Arts NC State goals.
  • Provide Village residents with information about transitional opportunities and experiences for a second year and beyond.

Open and Welcoming Community

  • Create and maintain an open and welcoming community.
  • Foster a community encompassing various student populations.
  • Participate in and encourage participation in ongoing training to support the needs of the community.
  • Serve as an advocate and role model for staff and village participants.

Crisis and Resident Behavior

  • As needed, support the Residence Life team in crisis response and management implementing restorative justice practices.
  • Serve as a resource and make referrals for residents and staff experiencing personal challenges and crises.

Administration

  • Maintain accurate records and complete annual reports for assessment and executive summaries.
  • Provide budget oversight for the Village community, including budget proposal, tracking and monthly reconciliation, marketplace ordering, and processing of receipts.
  • In collaboration with University Housing and DASA Marketing & Communications, develop and maintain the village website, marketing materials, and a branding plan, capture student testimonials, photo and video documentation, and maintain an active social media presence.
  • Coordinate Village recruitment activities in tandem with University and arts-sponsored outreach in collaboration with the Associate Director, Residential Learning and Conference and Guest Services staff.
  • Coordinate Village start-of-term welcome events (i.e. symposium, Village orientation, Village Retreat).

Supervision

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate 5 Village Mentors and a Graduate Assistant, Residential Learning (where applicable).
  • Coach Village Staff through regular 1 : 1 and staff meetings.
  • Attend and assist in facilitating departmental training sessions.
  • Assist with departmental recruitment and selection processes.

Partnership Development

  • Responsible for creating, leading, and facilitating Advisory Council meetings
  • Serve as a liaison with Arts NC State to help coordinate the Visiting Artist in Residence Program with Arts NC State and establish opportunities to engage with Arts Village participants.
  • Cultivate interdisciplinary collaborations with other living and learning Villages to broaden student learning opportunities and leverage resources.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with campus units, academic college faculty, University staff, and members of the Greater Raleigh Community that support student learning outcomes and the Village mission.
  • Cultivate and nurture a relationship with the Assistant Director and Residence Life Coordinator to further the Village mission and achieve a unified student experience within the residential community

Teaching / Instruction and Other Opportunities

  • Teach village linked course (AVS 100)
  • Add students to the AV student group in the Student Information System (SIS).
  • Coordinate student enrollment in AVS 100
  • Serve on University College Courses and Curricular committee
  • In collaboration with the Director for Residential Learning, and the Executive Director for Arts NC State, develop a professional development plan.

Other Responsibilities

This position is required to handle confidential information appropriately and is bound by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

This position is also a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act as well as Responsible Employees under Title IX and are mandatory reporters for any crimes or incidents of sex discrimination of which they are made aware.

  • On a specific event / condition basis, the University may also take the unusual measure of calling-in employees who are not normally designated as mandatory and temporarily assign them to this status, if a specific adverse weather or other emergency event is critical enough to require it, as determined by the employee’s immediate supervisor or next level manager.
  • This position will be assigned tasks to support University Housing functions during transition periods. This includes but is not limited to fall move-in, move-out and outreach events like (Experience NC State, University Open House and New Student Orientation.

Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience

  • A Master’s degree in the Arts, Higher Education / Student Affairs, Student Counseling, College Student Development, Career Counseling, or a related field
  • 2 to 3 years post-masters work experience with progressively responsible duties in the following : Administrative, supervisory, mentoring / coaching experienceCollege-level teaching, student advising, student development, program development, and / or curriculum developmentAssessment
  • 1 to 2 years of relevant experience in Arts Education or related professional experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 5 years experience, post-masters degree in Arts Education at the collegiate level
  • 1 to 2 years of relevant experience with living and learning communities.
