GCSC Community Programming Intern Spring 2025

Greater Cleveland Sports Commission (GCSC) serves to measurably improve the economy of Greater Cleveland and enrich the community by attracting, creating, managing and enhancing significant sporting and competitive events.

GCSC supports the local economy, utilizes sports as a vehicle to forward community agendas and maintains a goal of producing events that are more successful when held in Cleveland than in other cities.

Greater Cleveland Sports Commission is hiring for our Spring Internship Program (January May), with an anticipated start date around January 14, 2025.

As GCSC Community Programming Intern , you will :

Primary Responsibilities :

  • Support the Youth Education through Sports programming series.
  • Assist with city-wide community impact programming for major events.
  • Assist full-time staff with on-site management of youth and community programming.
  • Attend on-site walkthroughs and planning meetings.
  • Assist with research and outreach to community organizations.
  • Aid in the planning and logistics for future hosted events.
  • Work hands on as event operations staff as needed during Greater Cleveland Sports Commission events :

o JVA Rock n’ Rumble January 10-12 & January 17-19

o AAU Cleveland Open February 1-2

o Greater Cleveland Sports Awards February 6

o Nike North Coast Cup February 15-17

o USA Fencing March North American Cup March 7-9

o NCAA DI Men’s Basketball 1st & 2nd Rounds March 20-23

o Nike Shamrock Showdown March 15-16

o Dru Joyce Classic April 11-13

o USAAS 13-15 & 12U Championships , Age Group Nationals April 24-27

o Nike Open April 26-27

Other Duties Include :

  • Assist full-time staff with event promotion, day-to-day operations, and on-site event management.
  • Aid in the distribution of material associated with community programming and events.
  • Research and target prospective programs to develop and host in conjunction with upcoming events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements :

  • Prior experience with youth and event planning is preferred.
  • Experience working with large and diverse groups of people ( children , adults, students, etc.).
  • Eager to learn the business of sports and ability to think outside the box.
  • Interest in diversity, equity, and inclusion in sports, including adaptive sports, gender equity, LGBTQIA+ athletes , mental health, and racial equity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Be passionate and have a team-player attitude.
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited College / University (undergraduate or post-graduate program) or have recently completed (6-months).
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment during events with long hours.

Work Environment : Office environment; moderate noise. Event environments will vary and include both indoor and outdoor requirements.

Due to the nature of the organization, our projects and events are rarely the same; the internship experience depends entirely on the current happenings of GCSC.

Work Hours : Intern work hours are based upon individual schedules and interns will work and be paid for up to 20 hours per week, between 9 : 00 a.

m. 5 : 00 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. If the student is receiving college credit for the internship, the college or university can help define work hours for the student, up to 20 hours per week.

GCSC Staff is flexible in terms of exact work hours, however a loose schedule will be required in advance. During events, additional hours and weekend times are expected.

Compensation : Greater Cleveland Sports Commission interns will be paid an hourly rate for their time and services, up to 20 hours per week.

Biweekly payment will be provided to interns to cover expenses that may be incurred.

Flexibility : Remote work options are anticipated for staff and interns on select days during this time. Candidates are asked to be flexible in their ability to work both remotely, in-person at our office in Downtown Cleveland, and on-site at events throughout the year.

From a scheduling perspective, interns should expect a minimum of 3 days a week where they will need to work in-person.

Transportation and Parking : Transportation and parking are not provided by GCSC. However, if an intern chooses to accept a parking spot in an assigned covered garage in Downtown Cleveland, GCSC will take on a portion of that monthly cost.

Interns will be responsible for the other portion on a monthly basis. Interns may also use the RTA system (the central station is in Tower City).

RTA schedules and routes can be found at www.riderta.com . Additional parking options are made available at the intern’s expense.

Supervision : The Programming and Event Manager will serve as the supervisor for the internship program. However, some day-to-day activities will be assigned and monitored by other staff members.

Interns must be able to establish close working relationships with the entire GCSC staff. A general respect both for and from the intern is expected and required.
