New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) is New York City’s premier interactive museum of science and technology, a global leader in STEM education, and a laboratory for new forms of learning.

Founded during the 1964 1965 World’s Fair, NYSCI is recognized for groundbreaking exhibitions, innovative educational programs, youth development and mentorship, teacher professional development initiatives, and small- and large-scale events that draw children and adults into experiential STEM learning.

From Pre-K to college and beyond, NYSCI is creating a trajectory of STEM learning experiences to develop diverse pathways of opportunity for the problem-solvers of tomorrow.

Located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park (alongside Citi Field, Flushing Meadows, and BJK Tennis Center), in the borough of Queens, NYSCI welcomes 500,000 visitors annually, provides professional development for more than 2,500 local teachers, and offers 2,000 high school and college students mentoring opportunities with STEM professionals.

Over the last three decades, 95 percent of the more than 4,000 young people participating in NYSCI’s Science Career Ladder program have gone on to college, and 70 percent of their alumni work in STEM fields.

NYSCI’s drive to make STEM education accessible to all starts at home in Corona, Queens, one of the most diverse and underserved communities in the country.

The museum collaborates with community members, local schools, and community-based organizations to develop learning opportunities that improve access to STEM in fun and exciting ways.

NYSCI hosts free weekly Community Hours and delivers hands-on science and engineering activities at events throughout the local area.

Their free family workshops make STEM available to parents in culturally relevant ways so they feel more comfortable and confident in supporting their children’s learning.

Opened in Fall 2022, the Mosaic Pre-K Center (PS 369Q) on NYSCI’s campus provides a unique opportunity to engage and inspire the littlest learners through a unique suite of experiences, curricula, and science coaching that will inform early childhood learning across the nation.

Through this unique partnership with the city, NYSCI educators are working with the school’s leadership and faculty to ensure that science is an integral part of the curriculum.

Literally just a few steps away, NYSCI is a permanent resource for the school, and teachers are using NYSCI as a routine part of the children’s learning experiences.

POSITION OVERVIEW

New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) is seeking an innovative Senior Vice President of Human Resources (SVPHR) to lead all aspects of HR, including talent management, total rewards, DEI, HRIS administration, compliance, labor relations, and learning and development.

As a strategic leader and trusted advisor, the SVPHR will provide executive-level guidance and day-to-day direction across the entire HR function.

Reporting to a newly appointed President & CEO, the SVPHR will serve as a change agent and advocate for continuous improvement, leading efforts to enhance talent management practices.

This includes ensuring that NYSCI attracts, retains, and develops top talent, establishing itself as an employer of choice.

Additionally, the SVPHR will be responsible for building strong partnerships across the organization, delivering strategic HR leadership that promotes collaboration, innovation, and a positive work environment.

In this role, the SVPHR will be pivotal in shaping an organizational culture that prioritizes DEI, fosters collaboration, and drives high performance.

This leader will champion progressive HR practices and policies, ensuring not only legal compliance but also setting a new standard for the future of work as New York’s premier interactive museum of science.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Talent Management

  • Develop and implement comprehensive talent management strategies to attract, develop, and retain top talent, ensuring alignment with the organization’s long-term goals and objectives.
  • Oversee talent acquisition, performance management, succession planning, and career development programs to create a pipeline of high-performing employees ready for leadership roles.
  • Utilize data-driven insights to evaluate talent management initiatives, ensuring they are effective, competitive, and aligned with the organization's needs.

Leadership and Planning

  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO and executive leadership team, contributing to the development and execution of the organization's strategic plans.
  • Provide insights and recommendations on HR implications of business strategies, ensuring alignment between HR initiatives and overall organizational goals.
  • Act as a culture champion, driving initiatives that promote an inclusive, high-performing, and collaborative work environment, and supporting the organization’s mission, vision, and values.

People and Culture

Collaborate with the SVP of Youth Development and Museum Culture to foster an inclusive workplace where diversity of thought, background, and experience is valued.

Drive initiatives that promote equity, cultural competence, and a sense of belonging for all employees.

  • Develop strategies to enhance employee engagement, satisfaction, and well-being. Implement programs that encourage open communication, feedback, and a collaborative environment where all employees can thrive.
  • Collaborate with leadership to design and implement the organization's DEI strategy. Ensure that DEI principles are embedded in all HR practices, from talent acquisition and development to retention and leadership opportunities, creating a more equitable and diverse workforce.

Compliance and Policy Development

  • Ensure that all HR policies and procedures are legally compliant, up-to-date, and effectively communicated to employees across the organization.
  • Monitor and maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, adapting policies and practices as necessary.
  • Develop and enforce ethical HR policies that reflect the organization's commitment to fairness, equity, and transparency.

Total Rewards

  • Oversee the design, implementation, and management of competitive total rewards programs, including compensation, benefits, incentives, and recognition initiatives that attract and retain talent.
  • Conduct regular benchmarking and market analysis to ensure that the organization's compensation and benefits packages remain competitive and equitable.
  • Lead efforts to communicate total rewards programs effectively, ensuring employees understand and appreciate the full value of their benefits.

Learning & Development

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive learning and development strategy that supports employee growth, skill enhancement, and leadership development at all levels.
  • Ensure that learning and development initiatives are aligned with the organization’s strategic goals, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.
  • Measure the effectiveness of training programs, using insights to make data-driven decisions and improve future learning initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, Communications, a related field, and / or its work experience equivalent
  • 10+ years of progressive human resource management experience, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
  • A track record of capacity for managing organizational operations and leading change management processes
  • Extensive experience with strategic talent management, business development, labor relations, and HR operations.
  • Proven track record of success in leading HR functions in a non-profit, cultural institution and / or unionized environments.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and executing DEI strategies that align with organizational goals.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent leadership, team-building, and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative and inclusive leadership style.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to influence and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Expertise in employment laws, compliance, and HR best practices.
  • Experience with as a Human Resource Information System (HRIS) Administrator (ADP WorkforceNow)
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Stationary works station : The employee must be able to remain in a stationary sitting position for up to 8 hours a day with appropriate breaks.
  • Manual dexterity : The role requires the frequent use of hands for typing, writing, and handling office equipment.
  • Visual acuity : The employee must have the visual ability to perform extensive computer work for long periods, including reading and analyzing data on a computer screen.
  • Communication : The role requires the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and verbal forms.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • Professional certification such as SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, or SPHR is strongly preferred.
  • Prior HR leadership experience in a Museum, Cultural Institution, and / or Non-profit organization
  • Prior ADP WorkforceNow Practitioner and Primary Administrator
  • Bilingual and multilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply
