Medical Lab Technician (MLT) Scholarship

Medical Associates, the area’s leading healthcare provider multispecialty group practice based out of Dubuque, Iowa is currently offering a competitive scholarship opportunity for first and second-year Medical Lab Technician (MLT) students.

Scholarships are available for students who have enrolled in either the Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) / Hawkeye Community College's (HCC) or the Southwest Tech (SWTC) MLT program for Fall 2024.

Med Lab Tech (MLT) is a two-year program. Ideal candidates would possess strong organizational and critical thinking skills, the ability to multi-task and a high level of professionalism.

Individuals will be helpful and courteous to all team members while creating a positive work environment.

What does an MLT do :

As a Medical Lab Technician at Medical Associates, you will be responsible for performing and reporting lab testing in Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Serology, and limited Blood Bank and Microbiology.

Duties will also include verifying specimen labeling and integrity, processing specimens, investigating results, drawing blood, and performing instrument maintenance which includes troubleshooting and repair.

Scholarship Details :

  • Fully funded tuition for the MLT program (valued up to $18,000!) at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) and Hawkeye College or SWTC.
  • Applicants must currently be enrolled in the MLT program or beginning the program in August 2024.
  • NICC students will complete two semesters of study at NICC and a summer term plus one semester at Hawkeye Community College (HCC) in Waterloo, Iowa before completing a 24-week clinical internship.
  • SWTC students will complete 5 semesters at SWTC followed by a clinical internship.
  • One-time national certification exam fee paid after licensure received, through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
  • Scholarship recipient shall be hired and begin work in a full-time position at Medical Associates upon successful completion of the program.

Medical Associates will cover the cost of tuition, books, and exam fees after other federal, state, institutional and private awards including Federal Pell Grant and Last Dollar Scholar have been applied.

Employment Details Upon Completion of Program

  • Scholarship recipient agrees to work full-time (36-40 hours / week) for Medical Associates upon graduation.

Education : High school diploma or GED or higher.

Experience : Customer Service or healthcare experience preferred. Helpful academic background (but not required) include biology, chemistry, and mathematics.

Interpersonal Skills : A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and / or is usually of a personal or sensitive nature.

Work may involve motivating or influencing others. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and / or individuals) becomes necessary.

Other Skills : Keyboarding skills and use of electronic equipment.

Physical Aspects :

Stooping - Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

Kneeling - Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.

Crouching - Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

Reaching - Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Standing - Particularly for sustained periods of time.

Walking - Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances.

Pushing - Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.

Pulling - Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

Lifting - Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.

Fingering - Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.

Grasping - Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

Feeling - Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

Talking - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly or quickly.

Hearing - Perceiving the nature of sound with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound, such as when making fine adjustments on machined parts.

Vision - 20 / 40 or better in the best eye with or without correction

Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and / or 10 pounds force constantly to move objects.
