Job Summary
Under direction, oversees the daily operation of one or more animal research areas.
Responsibilities
Prepares schedules of aquatic animal husbandry, tasks aquatic husbandry employees and ensures that assignments are completed in a timely manner.
Trains aquatic animal care staff, ensures that procedures are performed in alignment with departmental standard operating procedures.
Under direction, mentors other aquatic employees and helps provide opportunities for career growth.
Under direction, manages aquatic animal care staff in accordance with institutional human resources guidelines, including hiring, performance evaluation, disciplinary action, and termination.
Reviews assigned aqatic animal housing sites for deficiencies and ensures correction of issues related to procedures, equipment, and policies.
Maintains supply inventory to ensure availability for facility operations.
Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required :
Nearly Continuously : Standard vivarium environment; with typical vivarium environmental hazards and concerns. Standard laboratory environment;
Safety shoes are required to be worn by all employees working in animal facilities
Seldom : Occasionally handles / works with biohazards or risks for potential job-related injury, rarely coming in contact with hazardous materials.
Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required :
Nearly Continuously : Sitting, hearing, listening, talking, walking.
Often : Bending, reaching overhead, twisting.
Seldom : Lifting up to 50 pounds, kneeling, squatting.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or 8 years relevant experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
LAT to be obtained within one year in the position.
