Job Summary

All Pharmacy Technicians are accountable to the supervising or operating pharmacist who is legally responsible by virtue of state licensure for the care and safety of patients served by Pharmaceutical Services.

The Pharmacy Transitions of Care Technician performs all activities related to transitions of care for patients, including obtaining accurate medication histories and helping facilitate patient access to medications.

This job will also entail completing prior authorizations and assisting with patient discharge activities, while providing support to pharmacists, providers, and students on their experiential learning rotations primarily in the General Medicine service units.

Additionally, there will be an operational component in the centralized pharmacy areas.

Department Description

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services provides a full range of services for patients cared for by the UCSF Medical Center and its providers and payors.

  • These services include, but are not limited to : drug procurement, storage, and security; safe, accurate and timely preparation and distribution of drugs;
  • clinical pharmacy services for patients; development of drug use policies within the Medical Center; drug information services for clinicians and patients;

and participation in technology assessment and quality assurance programs. The Department of Pharmaceutical Services is affiliated with the UCSF Department of Clinical Pharmacy, an academic department within the School of Pharmacy, which has primary responsibility for teaching professional courses in the Pharm.

The Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Services share their philosophy of pharmaceutical care. Under Pharmaceutical Services, the Technician III provides pharmaceutical care to patients at Parnassus, Mission Bay, Mount Zion campuses and specialized services to researchers on campus.

The Pharmacy Technician III performs all activities related to medication preparation and dispensing, inventory management, and administrative projects.

Please note : The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point.

An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized / accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program (includes hands-on training period during externship), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years' experience as a Pharmacy Technician in hospitals or health care, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT)
  • Preferred candidates with at least two years of I.V. Additives experience
  • Knowledge of USP 797 / 800 standards, hazardous and aseptic IV techniques for sterile compounding
  • Knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint software programs, Pyxis machine, and Primary Engineering Control (PEC)

License / Certification

Licensed Pharmacy Technician by the California Board of Pharmacy and in good standing.
