The Research Information Systems department, also known as MAESTRO, supports the mission of Sponsored Research Services (SRS) through development, implementation, and maintenance of the Maestro enterprise information system.

This system supports researchers across The Texas A&M University System. By maintaining and improving Maestro, our employees serve a critical role in the advancement of the research goals of the university.

What We Want

Research Information Systems (MAESTRO) is seeking a Lead Systems / Database Engineer who will is responsible for installation, administration and monitoring of the most complex systems including Linux servers, Oracle databases, middle tier servers for Maestro Research Information System using systems engineering principles.

They will provide technical oversight of the architecture and engineering of our cloud-based systems and build our Infrastructure as Code scripts and manage all progress using JIRA.

The qualified candidate must have skills administering Oracle databases; knowledge in Linux operating systems including administration and patching;

knowledge in DevOps automation tools like Ansible and / or Terraform; and knowledge of PL / SQL or similar programming language.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience :

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Five years of related experience in systems engineering, Linux administration, Oracle database architecture and administration.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

Skills administering Oracle databases.

Knowledge in Linux operating systems including administration and patching.

Knowledge in DevOps automation tools like Ansible and / or Terraform.

Knowledge of PL / SQL or similar programming language.

Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Qualifications :

Knowledge or experience with network administration and configuration.

Extensive experience with the Oracle Database, Oracle Exadata and Oracle Linux.

A working knowledge of load balancing software.

Knowledge of Research Administration systems.

Experience with the Oracle cloud infrastructure (OCI)

Knowledge or experience with IaC tools such as Ansible.

Skills implementing and provisioning cloud solutions for Research Administration.

Ability to use cloud technology stack and tools for improvising solutions.

Knowledge or experience with network administration and configuration.

Experience with Oracle cloud products, Oracle RAC and Oracle Exadata.

Experience administrating Jaspersoft or other BI tools.

Working knowledge of load balancing software.

Familiar with administrating containers such as Docker or Podman.

Familiar with version control systems like Git.

Responsibilities

System Engineer : Provisions cloud resources, migrate and maintain cloud environments. Performs and coordinates Oracle WebLogic, Jaspersoft, Keycloak and Podman upgrades and maintenance.

Monitors all Maestro systems and resolves cloud, middle tier and performance problems. Configures and manages cloud network, firewall and load balancers.

Writes and maintains PL SQL programs. Reviews security posture for implementations. Maintains familiarity with version control and containerization.

Automates tasks using ansible and adds to existing IaC solutions aligning with cloud technologies. Utilizes experience in Oracle Exadata, Tomcat, Infrastructure as Code (IaC) IT Automation tools.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Linux Administrator : Performs and coordinates operating system patching, upgrades, and monitors resource utilization. Investigates and installs new software tools as needed.

Reviews and coordinates yearly audits / assessments. Assists and coordinates in the administration of workstations and equipment in our training room.

Oracle Database Administrator : Performs and coordinates database upgrades, monitors database performance, and tunes it when needed.

Makes sure that recovery environment is always in sync and ready to replace production. Reviews, tests, updates and reviews yearly disaster recovery process.

Manages infrastructure related activities with all stakeholders. Utilizes experience in database administration; Oracle Database, Oracle Data Guard, Oracle Fusion Middleware or Weblogic and Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM), Linux OS, Disaster recovery, Database Patching, Capacity Planning, Performance Tuning, and PL / SQL.

Architect and Mentor : Serves as the technical lead and manages infrastructure projects. Provides technical oversight for the application of and compliance with technical standards.

Operations Coordinator : Monitors daily batch jobs, performs and manages database backups and clones development, training, test, quality control, and administrative instances on request.

Manages system operations including RIS release deployments and issue management using Jira. Reviews issues and implementations in JIRA Completes reports and summaries for management and users including project status reports, problem reports, and progress summaries.

Participates in training and professional development.
