Job Summary
The Public Safety Officer I is responsible for the detection and prevention of crime, for the protection of persons, property and the general maintenance of peace, order and security;
duties include patrol, crowd control, traffic control and dispatching.
Minimum Qualifications :
- Candidates will have, at least a some college credits after having completed high school or GED. College requirement not necessary for those with qualifying military service
- Must possess and maintain a valid US driver’s license
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a NYS Security Guard License
- CPR and AED certification must be completed within three months of hire
- All Public Safety Officer I incumbents must successfully complete Rensselaer's Field Officer Training Program within four (4) months of hire
Must be available for flexible shift scheduling
Note : Five (5) years of safety, security, law enforcement experience or other related experience may be substituted for college credits
Relevant combinations of education, training and experience may be considered.

- Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking skills
- Must possess the ability to assess a situation and apply appropriate conflict resolution techniques
- Ability to use crisis intervention techniques
- Ability to use relevant personal and / or mobile computing technology
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Requires ability to handle multiple emergency situations
- Requires excellent customer relations skills and the ability to deal effectively with a diverse population in an academic setting
Preferred Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities
Knowledge of computerized emergency and data base systems

Public Safety : Various Shifts. All members of the Department of Public Safety must be available for flexible shift scheduling Including :
3rd shift 11 : 00 PM - 7 : 00 AM
2nd Shift 3 : 00 PM - 11 : 00 PM
1st Shift 7 : 00 AM - 3 : 00 PM
Travel
Local travel between campus locations only
Driving
Driving a Rensselaer vehicle for non-passenger use
Salary Range / Rate
Expected hiring range : $20.25
