The Center for Inherited Blood Disorders (CIBD) is a mission-driven non-profit focused on delivering high-quality, comprehensive, and family-centered care to improve the quality of life for children and adults with blood disorders.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Infusion Manager, the Nuse Practitioner is responsible for the care and treatment of patients in the Infusion Center.

The NP also assures the prescribing and safe administration of various infusion therapies and other related medications while providing quality and compassionate care including thorough and accurate patient assessment, inserting short peripheral vascular access devices, accessing central vascular devices, caring and maintaining patients IV access, and providing patient education.

Part-time Shift

  • DOH to October : Fridays 7 : 00am - 5 : 00pm (one 10-hr shift)
  • Post October : Thursdays & Fridays 7 : 00am - 7 : 00pm (two 12-hr shifts)

Essential Duties

Pre-Infusion

Performs detailed age specific examination and assessment of patients in the infusion center and delivers care and education in accordance with infusion center protocol per INS and NICA, and all applicable accreditation, federal, state and local regulations.

i.e., interviews, screening, vital sign assessments, etc.).

  • Orders, dispenses, and prescribes medications appropriately for infusion patients.
  • Prepares medications, equipment and supplies while ensuring medication rooms are clean and stocked with required supplies and materials.
  • Inserts short peripheral vascular access devices and discontinue central vascular access devices safely per protocol, while retaining patient comfort and dignity in the process.

During Infusion

  • Administers ordered infusions, various injections, subcutaneous, oral, and other medications described under the center scope of services.
  • Accurately documents patient care services (demographics, treatment, care notes, vitals, etc.) within the electronic medical record.
  • Reviews orders received and verifies medical records and diagnostic tests to support diagnosis and treatment.
  • Performs any necessary lab work / testing and provides follow up on test orders, reporting results to providers, patients or legal representatives.
  • Observes patient's condition and reaction to drugs and treatments and records it in the EMR.
  • Transfers patients to the Emergency Department as necessary per facility protocol and informs legal representative(s) and notifies the ER of patients condition.

Post- Infusion

  • Communicate with patient, legal guardian, referring providers and other providers on patients care and treatment plan.
  • Provides comprehensive education and teaching to patients and their caregivers so that patient / caregiver can comfortably administer their medications at home as needed.
  • Assists infusion staff / providers with answering phones; will be assigned other duties as patient care and Infusion center operational needs change.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Accountable for maintaining a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations. (Blood Borne Pathogens, Hand Hygiene, Title 22 requirements, etc.).
  • Protects patient confidentiality per HIPAA rules as well as CIBDs policy and procedures.
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintain professional affiliations while attending appropriate training, seminars, workshops, and conferences as required.

Required Education and Experience

  • Masters of Science In Nursing
  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing
  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nurse Practitioner
  • Minimum 3 years of clinical nursing experience in acute care or ambulatory setting
  • Minimum 3 years of infusion therapy experience
  • Minimum 3 years of pediatric experience

Required Licensure / Certification / Registration :

  • Current, unrestricted Nurse Practitioner License in California
  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • American Academy of Nurse Practitioner Certified Board (AANPCB)

  • CRNI Certificate
  • INS Membership
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
