POSITION OBJECTIVE

The executive director of development will manage a comprehensive advancement program, with primary focus on the management and solicitation of individual and foundation gifts for the College of Arts and Sciences at Case Western Reserve University from its natural constituency and beyond (gifts of $500,000 and above), including major, planned, and restricted gifts requiring that approximately 80 percent of their time be spent on direct face-to-face cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.

The Office of Development and External Relations includes fundraising, alumni relations, and donor engagement. In addition to and in coordination with the associate dean for development and external relations, the executive director is responsible for the development of overall fundraising plans for the College of Arts and Sciences in alignment with the overarching strategies of the division of university relations and development and marketing and communications.

This person will engage a minimum of 75 prospects in direct face-to-face qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors, working closely with the associate dean for development and external relations.

The executive director, at the direction of the associate dean, will manage other directors and serve as second in command in the office of Development and External Relations.

The executive director will develop strong relations with the dean, the associate dean, faculty, college staff, central development personnel, university trustees, and other internal constituents.

Functioning as part of a university development team, the incumbent will be expected to work collegially, and in partnership, with school-based colleagues.

The executive director will assist in overseeing the university's fundraising programs and will offer counsel in planning and implementing school-specific initiatives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts ($500,000+) for the college in accord with fundraising priorities established by the dean and associate dean.

Ability to travel within Ohio and nationally will be required on a regular basis. Supervise all individual development officers and serve as mentor and advisor to external relations team (including development, alumni relations, and donor engagement professionals).

In absence of the associate dean, assume management responsibilities (operational, financial, and supervisory) for the entire office. (50%)

Assist in formulating an annual fundraising plan that articulates prospects to be seen, solicited and funds to be raised for the dean, associate dean, and other external relations officers.

Regularly review achievement toward completion of goals. Establish and execute identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities for college overall, plan gift strategies in conjunction with all external relations staff members.

Work with the dean, department chairs, and / or faculty and / or volunteers and other leaders to cultivate and solicit leadership gifts.

Cultivate and drive major gift solicitations by working closely with the assistant dean, assistant vice presidents, deans, and other school development officers. (25%)

Implement the major components of a comprehensive campaign in support of the college, including strategic planning, oversight, staff and volunteer management, and solicitation strategies.

Collaborate with the university s corporate and foundation relations officers, as well as the dean and associate dean, department chairs, faculty and staff on development and coordination of gifts from corporations and foundations.

Responsible for proposal preparation for funding appeals to external constituencies, including corporations and foundations. (15%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Identify, qualify, recruit, and train a core group of volunteer solicitors to assist with regional cultivation and solicitation activities.

Operate effectively, both as an individual and in a team environment, under the pressures of a major fundraising effort. (4%)

  • Assist with the staffing of alumni and development events and provide support for regional volunteer leadership recruited to further the college s overall goals for development. (4%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the associate dean and the dean including but not limited to management of other existing and future development, alumni, and marketing programs. (2%)

CONTACTS

  • Department : Frequent contact with dean, associate deans, department chairs and directors. Contact with faculty, students and staff as required to perform essential functions.
  • University : Contact with the president's office, vice presidents, deans, trustees, alumni, directors of administrative departments, faculty and staff as required to perform essential functions.
  • External : Daily contact with donors, alumni, foundation representatives, community organizers / advocates, corporate executives, and federal, state, and local government officials.

Contact with foreign visitors, officials and academic boards and organizations as required to perform essential functions.

Students : Contact with undergraduate, graduate, and professional students as required to perform essential functions.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Responsible for directly supervising individual development officers.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience : 10 or more years of experience in development or related field required. Strongly prefer experience in the fields of higher education.
  • Education : Bachelor's degree is required; prefer Master's degree.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Significant demonstrated experience and management skills to provide leadership to the entire program.
  • High degree of energy, creativity, flexibility, organization, attention to detail, and interpersonal skills as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
  • Computer proficiency (including Microsoft Office) and the ability to learn new programs.
  • Ability to meet consistent attendance.

WORKING CONDITIONS

General office environment, some evening and weekend work hours will be required. Frequent travel required.
