Substitute Special Education Aide
An ESS substitute special education aide assists the classroom teacher to provide extra support to students with special needs, promoting maximum academic and personal growth.
The substitute paraprofessional job responsibilities range from supplementing regular classroom curriculum to helping individual students.
Substitute special education aide are also known as school aides, teacher assistants, instructional aides, one-to-one aides, and personal care assistants.
JOB SUMMARY :
To assist teacher(s) of exceptional students and disabled students in achieving student academic and IEP program goals and objectives.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Exhibits a positive attitude and reinforces small signs of student growth.
- Participates in :
- Daily / weekly planning and preparation with teacher(s)
- Training and program meetings
- Meetings when requested by the principal / administrator
- Serves as chief resource to the support teacher(s) and the substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular support teacher.
- Administers, scores, and records objective tests, excluding placement, achievement and diagnostic tests. Assists with daily work and make-up work as the teacher recommends for individual students.
Compiles student data and maintains records.
- Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
- Guides independent study, enrichment work and remedial work assigned by the teacher.
- Assists the teacher with large group activities, (i.e., drill work, reading aloud, storytelling).
- Assists the teacher in the preparation of bulletin boards and other instructional materials, as warranted.
- Follows written / oral teacher instructions.
- Uses office equipment and other instructional devices, as appropriate.
- Performs routine clerical tasks including filing, typing, and sorting.
- Implements behavior intervention plans.
- Collaborates with colleagues, administrators, parents, and teaching staff.
SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER AIDE NON-INSTRUCTIONAL
- Maintains a positive, courteous manner when interacting with children, parents, other employees, and public.
- Attends job-related workshops and training programs.
- Assists in maintaining a clean, orderly, and safe classroom.
- Adjusts to flexible working hours set by the Superintendent.
- Performs other job-related functions as may be assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS :
- Qualifications :
- High school diploma and a minimum of 48 credits from an institution of higher learning which assigns associate degrees
- First aid and CPR certification or willingness to gain said certification
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable
- Must possess computer skills
- Ability to operate various school / office equipment
- Physical Demands :
- Ability to reach above and below the waist
- Ability to use fingers to pick, feel and grasp objects
- Some stooping, bending, and twisting of the body required
- Ability to lift and / or carry supplies and / or papers weighing no more than 40 pounds
- Ability to mostly sit with some standing, walking, or moving throughout the classroom
