Under general direction, the Associate Engineer performs professional engineering work in the field and office and supervises the work of junior and assistant engineers, technicians, inspectors, surveyors and other related personnel engaged in engineering projects.

The essential functions of the Associate Engineer class may vary depending on assignment and include :

• Preparing engineering designs, drawings and specifications.
• Preparing cost and quantity estimates for necessary labor, materials and equipment associated with construction.
• Providing engineering support to operations staff.
• Reviewing existing conditions and conducting studies of processes.
• Analyzing and resolving problems to ensure compliance with regulatory and performance standards.
• Supervising the preparation of detailed engineering drawings, specifications and calculations.
• Assigning and reviewing the work of subordinate staff and consultants.
• Determining resources necessary to complete assigned work.
• Reviewing plans, permit applications and specifications developed by staff, consultants and contractors.
• Verifying quantities, dimensions, safety requirements, and quality of work for engineering projects.
• Preparing and supervising the preparation of a wide variety of technical engineering reports and other documentation.
• Interviewing, selecting, training, monitoring, evaluating and counseling staff.
• Preparing a variety of bid documents; reviewing and analyzing bids; conducting meetings and making presentations.

Performs other related duties as required.

How to qualify

1. Three (3) years of verifiable professional engineering experience of which two (2) years of professional experience equivalent to the City & County of San Francisco Class 5203 Assistant Civil Engineer or higher;

2. Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Electrical Engineering.

Substitutions :

• Candidates licensed in other states who meet the minimum requirements may file for this examination.
• There is no substitution for the required two years of work experience equivalent to a 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher.
• No general waiver available for City and County of San Francisco employees with less than the required experience for this position.

License or Certificate :

Working Conditions : Some positions may require specific lifting, climbing ladders, working in high places and confined spaces, exposure to various weather conditions, and extended periods of bending, sitting, and walking.

Verification : Applicants may be required to submit verification of qualifying education and experience at any point in the application, examination and / or departmental selection process.
