Job Description and Duties

As a Hydroelectric Plant Technician I, under close supervision of an Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) Technician Supervisor with guidance from the HEP Technician III, the incumbent performs routine and basic tasks on control, communication, electrical and mechanical equipment in connection with the operation and maintenance of SWP generating / pumping plants, switchyards, water conveyance, and facilities.

As a Hydroelectric Plant Technician II, under the direction of a Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) Technician Supervisor with guidance from the Hydroelectric Technician III, the incumbent safely performs the complex technical work on control, communication, electrical and mechanical equipment in connection with the operation and maintenance of State Water Project (SWP) generating / pumping plants, switchyards, water conveyance, and facilities.

Special Requirements

  • This position requires the incumbent to have : 1) the strength and ability to move and transport heavy equipment or material up to 50 lbs;
  • 2) the stamina and ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and stretch to access, test or install cables, equipment or materials;
  • 3) the stamina and ability to climb 25 foot ladders, long flights of stairs, scaffolding, and towers, to access, test or install cables, equipment or materials;
  • 4) the ability to identify color-coded parts, indicator lights, CRT display data, hazard warning tags, and warning barrier tapes;

5) the ability to work in confined spaces; and 6) the manual dexterity to use hand tools, operate control panels, equipment keypads and for delicate component or printed circuit board repair.

This position requires working around loud machinery.

This position requires the incumbent to : 1) work alone and as part of a team; 2) willing to work extended hours and on weekends as needed to support restoration of operations;

3) follow safety precautions inherent in the job.

Required to attend the Division’s OP-2 class and be certified as a worker and / or switch person, in compliance with State Water Project regulations.

This is a sensitive position and is subject to substance abuse testing set forth in California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) Regulations 599.960-599.966.

Must possess a valid California Driver License to travel from plant to plant and within the State Water Project, including driving a vehicle on public roadways will be required.

Under the provision of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation Critical Infrastructure Protection Standard CIP-004 as part of the Energy Policy of 2005, this position has authorized cyber access to or unescorted physical access around critical cyber assets and is subject to a satisfactory background check prior to appointment and every seven years thereafter.

This position is not eligible for telework.
