POSITION OVERVIEW

The Senior Director of Institutional Giving is a key leader in our Development Department, responsible for securing critical financial resources and fostering strategic relationships to advance New Horizons’ mission.

This role involves overseeing grant proposals, managing donor relationships, and collaborating with senior leadership to meet the agency’s strategic objectives.

Grant Management and Proposal Development

  • Research, prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals that align with agency goals and meet funder criteria.
  • Collaborate with relevant staff to ensure funding opportunities are in line with agency priorities, and develop tracking systems for grant expectations.
  • Identify and prioritize new funding opportunities that align with the agency’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Ensure that all grant-funded projects comply with funder guidelines, and oversee the timely submission of all required reports.
  • Work with the finance department to monitor the financial aspects of each grant, ensuring that all funds are spent in accordance with grant requirements.
  • Draft compelling grant narratives, budget justifications, and other required documentation to secure funding.

Donor Relations and Strategic Partnerships

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key donors, including foundations, individuals, and community stakeholders, ensuring they are informed of the agency’s progress.
  • Engage with Board and Emeritus Council members to identify potential leads for grants and foundations, and report successful connections to senior leadership.
  • Ensure acknowledgment of funders through various communication channels, including websites, e-newsletters, and social media.
  • Build and sustain long-term relationships with foundation partners.
  • Develop and implement strategies for engaging and cultivating relationships with major donors to secure significant gifts.
  • Design and oversee stewardship programs to ensure donors receive appropriate recognition and updates on the impact of their contributions.
  • Explore and establish strategic partnerships with corporations, foundations, and community organizations to enhance funding opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the events team to plan and execute donor recognition events, ensuring high levels of donor engagement and satisfaction.

Planning, Strategy, and Campaign Support

  • Maintain a master calendar of grants and prospects, ensuring all files and correspondence are up-to-date.
  • Work with senior leadership to develop and implement a Plan of Action for engaging major donors over one and five-year periods.
  • Contribute to the development of a planned giving program in collaboration with other senior leaders.
  • Support annual giving, capital campaigns, and other fundraising efforts as needed.
  • Work closely with other development team members to ensure effective communication and support across the department.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of multi-year fundraising campaigns, including capital campaigns and endowment initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Development team to implement donor segmentation strategies to tailor communication and fundraising approaches for different donor groups.
  • Contribute to the organization’s strategic planning process, providing insights and recommendations based on fundraising trends and opportunities.
  • Identify potential risks in fundraising strategies and develop contingency plans to mitigate these risks.
  • Advise on the allocation of resources within the development department to optimize fundraising outcomes.

Research, Advocacy, and Community Engagement

  • Research statistics, trends, and data for grant proposals and community advocacy efforts.
  • Gather stories from program staff, parents, and members to provide context for funders and the community.
  • Lead efforts to engage with community stakeholders, building awareness of the agency’s mission and garnering support for its programs.
  • Stay informed on relevant policy issues that impact the agency’s work and participate in advocacy efforts to influence positive change.
  • Collaborate with Development team to develop and manage storytelling initiatives that highlight the impact of the agency’s programs and services, both for internal and external audiences.
  • Collaborate with program staff to measure and report on the impact of the agency’s services, using data to enhance advocacy and fundraising efforts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Public Administration, Communications, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience working on a development team in the Nonprofit sector.
  • Proven success in securing significant funding through institutional giving.
  • Experience in leading and managing development teams, including supervising staff, volunteers, and consultants to achieve fundraising goals.
  • Extensive knowledge of fundraising principles, strategies, and best practices.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of crafting compelling grant proposals, reports, and donor communications.
  • Proficiency in donor management software (e.g., Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce) and advanced computer literacy in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a collaborative approach to achieving organizational goals.
  • A commitment to the mission of New Horizons and a passion for working with individuals with special needs.
  • High level of emotional intelligence, cultural competence, and sensitivity to the needs of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

COMPENSATION and BENEFITS

The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $130,000. This is a full-time salary-exempt position in Los Angeles, CA.
