Position Purpose

Brewster Village is looking for dedicated and compassionate caregivers who want to work in a team-based environment, where Person Directed Living is our top priority.
Serving as a functional member of the household team under general supervision of Food and Nutrition Services Director and the Lead Homemaker, the Homemaker prepares food items for villagers, engages villagers in food-related life enrichment and maintains sanitation standards in the working area.
This position will work an average of 32 hours per week from 7 : 30am-4 : 00pm with alternating weekends.
Key Responsibilities
The following duties are most critical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Prepares a variety of food items for villagers by soliciting their preferences, assuring quality appearance, and taste.
Measures and mixes ingredients according to recipe, calculating recipe adjustments as needed and using a variety of kitchen utensils and equipment such as blenders, mixers, grinders, slicers, etc.
- Ensures nutritional care plan approaches are being carried out, including preparing nutritionally enhanced food items, collaborates with Dietitian to ensure villagers' nutritional needs are being met, and care plan approaches are correct.
- Leads and participates in food related and social activities of villagers' choice which provide meaningful ways to spend time such as recreation, relationship building and enjoyment.
- Maintains and rotates food items in storage areas, ensuring appropriate stock levels based on household needs.
- Handles food and operates equipment in accordance with safety and sanitary practices and department policy.
- Washes and sanitizes wares using power soak and dish machine, cleans and sanitizes work area including household kitchen, counters, and equipment in accordance with department policies and procedures.
Performs routine and deep cleaning duties in the household kitchen and dining room.
- Participates on quality assurance / performance improvement committees and tasks as delegated.
- Maintains a safe, comfortable, and functional environment by assessing the household for potential hazards, implements practices utilizing appropriate techniques regarding sanitation, infection control, fire safety, disaster preparedness and emergency care.
- Promotes empowerment of the team in providing person-directed living by providing leadership and vision to the household and serving as a role model.
Participates in team problem solving.
Education / Certifications / Experience Requirements
- Graduate from high school or
- One year experience in quantity food preparation desired with a demonstrated knowledge of sanitation principles.
- Or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities
- This position does require successful completion of a Post Offer Pre Employment Examination (POPE).
Required or Preferred Skills
- Ability to see person-centered living as an important component in providing villagers a sense of health and well-being.
- Knowledge and ability to handle small kitchen appliances and perform moderately-advanced food preparation tasks.
- Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate in English with villagers, co-workers, and general public and understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Demonstrated ability to comply with appropriate sanitation and safety regulations.
- Ability to work semi-independently making sound decisions using good judgment.
- Ability to budget time and schedule work to efficiently complete tasks.
- Demonstrated reliability in attendance and flexibility to work hours based on the needs of the household.
- Demonstrated willingness to work out conflicts with others.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to the particular challenges villagers face in terms of communicating their needs and preferences.
- Experience using a computer system to import and print data, send and receive emails, electronic scheduling and e-learning.
