Position Summary :

Trupanion's Legal Department is looking for a smart and energetic attorney to join a fast-paced environment to help grow our company and the medical insurance for pets category.

Responsibilities will be varied but will focus on corporate, contracts, privacy, data governance and cybersecurity matters.

This will include internal advice, counseling and project management for business unit projects and across the organization.

The position will entail ownership of complex matters, direct contact with senior management, and engagement with counsel and third parties on a variety of issues.

If you live in the greater Seattle area, you will have a hybrid remote / in-office schedule where you will work from our casual, pet-friendly office at least 3 days a week.

What you will do :

Corporate responsibilities including drafting and negotiating commercial, IT and similar contracts; support on ’34 Act securities filings;

M&A matters and other strategic transactional efforts.

  • Wide range of legal matters related to privacy, data protection and data governance, and cybersecurity.
  • Give legal advice and be an operational leader to ensure Trupanion’s practices are in compliance with applicable global privacy laws, state privacy and insurance laws and regulations, and company policies and procedures.
  • Experience preferred with formal risk assessments and remediation activities related to privacy and cybersecurity, including with respect to third parties.
  • Advising on and negotiating data-related provisions for business transactions with vendors and other third parties.
  • Ability to partner with teams across the organization to develop and implement data governance practices and appropriately document related procedures.
  • Expertise in privacy and cybersecurity laws, regulations, and regulatory frameworks including GLBA, CCPA / CPRA, NYDFS, FCRA, and state security breach laws.
  • Experience preferred with development of Artificial Intelligence including machine learning and predictive models.

Qualifications :

  • 3-8 or more years of relevant legal experience as an attorney at a law firm or company of at least similar size and structure
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • Experience with insurance, finance or other heavily regulated industries is preferred;
  • Ability to adapt within a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment;
  • Exceptional academic credentials; and
  • Passion for Trupanion's mission to help pets and alignment with Trupanion's values.

  • A respect and passion for risk mitigation, privacy, data protection and other real-world cyber concerns of today’s international businesses;
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects at once, follow through proactively, and meet short deadlines;
  • Ability to lead projects and implement key initiatives with minimal supervision;
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to collaborate with teams of non-lawyers; and
  • A good sense of humor (work should be fun!).

Compensation :

  • The salary range for this position is $170,000 - $200,000 on a full-time schedule
  • Along with the base salary, Trupanion employees may be eligible for monthly bonuses.
  • We want all employees to be invested in Trupanion’s success, so we grant Restricted Stock Units to all new team members.

Our new hire grants vest over 4 years.
