The Dell Medical School of The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a dynamic sports medicine fellowship-trained physician to join the Musculoskeletal Institute as an Assistant, Associate or full Professor.

Eligible applicants are required to hold board certification in Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and fellowship training in Sports Medicine.

About the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care

The Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care is comprised of faculty in broad specialties (Anesthesiology, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery and Urology) with a focus on delivering outstanding care to the community.

About the position

The faculty member will be an integral part of a multidisciplinary team focused on designing and implementing an integrated program for sports medicine and performance.

The team will include surgical and non-surgical providers working together to manage patients with sports injuries and sports performance needs as well as developing programs to support a healthy and active community.

The individual should have interest in developing an ambitious Sports Medicine practice at UT Health Austin, the clinical practice of Dell Medical School, with intention to become a local and regional referral center.

Essential Functions :

  • Serve as a clinical content expert on Sports Medicine for the Musculoskeletal Institute's evidence-based care delivery and redesign initiatives.
  • Coordinate the design and implementation of the Sports / Injury team within the Musculoskeletal Institute at the Dell Medical School Health Transformation Building and other sites of service.
  • Assist in the training and management of the Sports / Injury clinical team.
  • Possess competency in managing concussions with return to activity, addressing and managing bone health, fracture care, and be able to utilize ultrasound for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
  • Participate in strategic planning and other efforts directly tied to the development and growth of the Musculoskeletal Institute.
  • Assist in the creation of a data and evaluation infrastructure for regularly assessing the clinical quality and cost outcomes for patients with sports related injuries and issues.
  • Develop partnerships with referring physicians, hospitals, and ancillary providers in Austin and Central Texas.
  • Train and mentor medical students and residents on new models of care and clinical practice.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education curricula related to evaluation and management of musculoskeletal disease.
  • Develop and foster an atmosphere of scientific and academic inquiry in conjunction with trainees and researchers within the multidisciplinary sports medicine team.
  • As opportunities arise, be part of the team for sideline coverage, event coverage, and coverage of collegiate and professional athletics.
  • Collaborate with other schools at The University of Texas at Austin on multidisciplinary, value-based care models.
  • Actively participate in the respective academic department of the candidate and abide by all required departmental policies.

Qualifications

Required :

  • Medical degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Texas (or the ability to obtain prior to appointment).
  • Current Board certification in Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
  • Fellowship training and Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine.
  • Eligible for an appointment as an Assistant, Associate or full Professor rank in the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin.

Preferred :

  • Experience with value-based care delivery and integrated practice models.
  • 2 years of clinical experience in Sports Medicine, preferentially with some involvement in covering competitive athletic teams.
  • Experience managing and delivering care through a multidisciplinary team.
  • Active Texas medical license in good standing.
  • Record of leadership and achievement in medical education and training.
