The Opportunity :

University of Michigan Health (UM-H), a world-class organization, is seeking a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the Regional Medical Group (RMG).

The CAO will report and is a dyad partner to the President, Regional Medical Group. The CAO is a pivotal position, responsible for providing administrative leadership toward the development of an aligned and coordinated multi-specialty employed medical group, through the integration of the currently separate Sparrow Health Medical Group and the University of Michigan Health Partners, the medical group for University of Michigan Health-West hospital.

The Position :

The Regional Medical Group Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) will have a dyad partnership with the President, Regional Medical Group.

Together they will lead the successful clinical, operational, strategic, and cultural integration and on-going management of the new Regional Medical Group.

This will be accomplished through the merger of the existing and separate employed providers within Sparrow Medical Group (SMG) in Lansing and the University of Michigan Health Partners (UMHP), which is the employed medical group for the University of Michigan Health-West community hospital in Grand Rapids.

The Regional Medical Group CAO is a critical leadership position for the University of Michigan and its plan for expanding high quality and coordinated care across Michigan.

The initial goal and efforts will be focused on the creation of a single multi-specialty employed medical group which in total is comprised of approximately 1003 providers (Physicians and APPs employed by UMHP, SMG and the hospital based employed providers at U-M Health-West) providing care within seven community-based hospitals and 99 ambulatory locations in and around Lansing, Grand Rapids, and other surrounding central and western Michigan communities.

The CAO will oversee the operational aspects of ambulatory clinics and ancillary facilities associated with RMG. This entails supervising direct report management personnel and collaborating closely with all other RMG management functions and centralized corporate functions supporting the RMG.

The CAO is responsible for achieving effective and efficient RMG ambulatory clinic operations and maintaining a consistent and productive culture across RMG that prioritizes collaboration and accountability.

The Ideal Candidate :

  • Master’s degree in health services management (MHA or MPH) or business administration (MBA) or equivalent degree is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience as a senior leader in physician practice leadership position within a multi-hospital, integrated system with locations across multiple regions.

Medical group operations experience in a multi-specialty ambulatory environment is required.

  • Detailed knowledge of physician practice management systems with the ability to quickly analyze and identify opportunities for operational and financial optimization and efficiency.
  • Demonstrated experience developing effective, trusting, credible and collaborative relationships with physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Must have proven work experience in enhancing process and performance standards, as well as a proven track record and success leading satellite ambulatory physician practice centers.
  • Proven track record in improving productivity and access.
  • Experience in designing creative, contemporary physician compensation programs and demonstrated knowledge of how to incentivize physicians.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, retain, mentor, and inspire a diverse group of physicians and clinicians.
  • Must understand pluralistic medical staff and have experience working with both employed multi-specialty employed providers and private practice / community providers.

The ideal candidate will also possess a related understanding of the differences with academic faculty.

  • Experience in medical group program administration, finance, cost / benefit comparisons, analysis of budget variances, and staffing resources is preferred.
  • Must have experience within a highly complex, matrixed health system environment and an ability to navigate effectively.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge and experience in management principles, processes, and procedures to successfully implement institutional performance improvements.

Expert in quality improvement.

  • Experience with value-based care models and supporting population health initiatives to advance quality and delivery of care.
  • Change management experience and proven ability to successfully lead during system transformation are strongly preferred.
  • Integration experience is strongly preferred and ideal if someone has worked in an evolving system where an academic medical center and a community health system are coming together.
  • Demonstrated track record of developing clinical service lines and helping to roll out across an evolving clinical enterprise is preferred.
  • Progressive responsibility and administrative experience in programmatic strategic planning, implementation, and evaluation within a complex health system environment.
  • Proven track record as an individual who works to achieve integration and alignment by promoting physicians working successfully with all members of the organization in a respectful and interdependent way.
  • Experience leading consolidation of practice sites and ancillary ambulatory operations and / or merger and acquisition experience is preferred.
  • Track record of success at managing, mentoring, and motivating team members, and managing diverse teams to accomplish a wide range of strategic and operational objectives.

The Organization :

The U-M Health Regional System (Regional System) includes the blending of two legacy health systems : University of Michigan Health-West and Sparrow Health System , which joined University of Michigan Health in April 2023.

On September 1, 2023, a new regional leadership structure went into effect and since then the Regional System leadership have been working diligently to develop new leadership structures to support a combined operating model with the goal of becoming a unified system that operates in a way to best meets the needs of the communities served.

The Regional Health System is led by Margaret Dimond, PhD and collectively includes 7 hospitals, 12,000+ employees, and $1.

8B in net operating revenue.

The combined Regional Medical Group will comprise approximately 1,003 providers across 99 locations (19 ambulatory UMH-West sites of care and 80 Sparrow sites of care) and currently accounts for 1.

5M annual patient encounters (annual patient encounters include office visits, surgeries, and procedures), 3.3M WRVUs, and annual budget of $342.5M.
