Summary
The Senior Manager, Green Coffee Quality and Sourcing is accountable for aligning Stumptown's sourcing practices with our broader business goals, and maintaining relationships with Stumptown's coffee supplier partners at all levels of the supply chain around the world.
This role manages the procurement of green coffee for forecasted inventory needs, quality profiles and pricing targets, and monitors and manages risks related to coffee pricing and global logistics, all in close collaboration with the VP of Coffee.
This role tracks and reports on relevant metrics related to green coffee : detailed cost information, current and projected inventory, quality profiles and performance.
The Senior Manager, Green Coffee Quality and Sourcing is an integral member of the Green Coffee Team and collaborates cross-functionally with the Finance, Product, Marketing, and Education departments.
This role implements supply chain projects and initiatives that support the company's quality, ESG and financial goals. To ensure fulfillment of Stumptown's established taste profiles and quality levels, this position engages in sensory evaluation and reporting, and is looked to as a leader on coffee within the organization.
Essential Functions
Sourcing and Purchasing
Support development of Stumptown's coffee purchasing strategy in close collaboration with the VP of Coffee.
Ensure Stumptown's sourcing model supports overall company quality, financial, marketing and ESG goals.
Actively manage Stumptown's green coffee position in close collaboration with the VP of Coffee, Finance team and Traffic team.
Identify volume and price targets by component, supplier, and origin. Ensure coffee position is aligned with financial targets including pricing and inventory levels.
Ensure optimal inventory levels on both coasts while minimizing logistics costs.
Solicit green coffee volume and price offers and import bids; negotiate directly with suppliers; review, analyze and execute purchase agreements.
Monitor and manage risks related to coffee pricing and global logistics.
Track and report on relevant metrics related to green coffee : detailed cost information, current and projected inventory levels, quality profiles, quality scores and performance.
Build and maintain strong relationships with producers, exporters, and importers who supply green coffee to Stumptown in a positive, thoughtful and professional manner.
Gather and organize detailed information on supplier partners including status of the relationship, potential for growth, harvest and shipment timing, production volumes and prices, and opportunities for co-investment initiatives.
Aggregate information from origin travel and other communication using established formats.
Manage origin travel schedule, budget and trip planning; execute sourcing trips with origin partners; represent the interests, needs, and values of the department and company abroad.
Track and report on origin-led projects and supply chain sustainability goals.
Advance Stumptown's social and environmental impact goals.
Quality
Evaluate offer, pre-ship, arrival, and spot-offer samples at Stumptown's QC Lab using SCA cupping protocol. Perform cupping at origin to assess quality and identify potential supply.
Exhibit fluency with flavor profile terminology and Stumptown-specific flavor and componentry terms.
Support Green Coffee Quality Control Specialist on blend recipe development for limited-release menu offerings and roast profile guidance for new or limited-release single origin coffees, in close collaboration with Stumptown Quality Assurance Department.
Ensure suppliers fulfill Stumptown's quality and food safety requirements.
Product, Marketing, & Internal Education
Advise Product and Marketing teams on single origin menu development and coffee strategy.
Provide information to ensure accuracy of the technical and general content on all coffees, including taste notes, geographic info, producer profiles, variety and processing information.
Support Green Coffee Quality Control Specialist in approval process for all external-facing coffee information and product campaigns.
Facilitate direct engagement opportunities with producer, exporter and importer partners for specific departments and broader employee base.
As a leading resource for employees regarding coffees and origin relationships, develop and deliver information to deepen employee engagement and connection to our coffees.
Qualifications
Demonstrated passion and enthusiasm for specialty coffee
8-10 years relevant experience, with at least 5 years in a coffee sourcing / trading or related role.
Strong experience with coffee trading, forecasting, analysis and reporting, logistics and supply chain management.
Strong business sense and financial acumen, with the proven ability to effectively manage and achieve financial targets and business objectives
Excellent cupping and sensory skills
Licensed Q Arabica Grader, or willingness to train and obtain Q Grader License
Prior work experience in coffee-producing countries preferred
High proficiency in both spoken and written Spanish preferred
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Familiarity with multiple technology platforms, including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Power BI, Mac OS, G Suite programs, D365 and Cropster;
strong Excel skills a must.
Physical Demands

Standing - ability to stand for long periods
Ability to travel up to 25% of time, in varied conditions, both domestically and internationally
Work Environment
Work is performed on site at the Stumptown Headquarters in Portland with regular travel to other markets and coffee-producing countries.
