Our client, a government organization in Oakland, is looking for a Safety Manager to join their team on a 6-month contract basis.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience organizing and managing professional and technical staff administering and implementing safety programs and plans related to workplace safety and loss prevention.
This role is 100% onsite in Oakland, CA and the hour pay range is between $75.00 - $80.00.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Plans, organizes, manages, and directs the operations, staff, and activities of the Safety unit including oversight of the safety programs and strategies
- Oversees the implementation and coordination of various safety management programs including training, environmental compliance, emergency preparedness, and emergency and business recovery programs.
- Manages employees within the Safety unit; develops, mentors and guides staff in achieving goals and objectives
- Develops and directs the implementation of goals, objectives, work standards, policies and procedures for the Safety unit.
- Oversees the establishment and implementation of standardized training programs to enhance and encourage employee awareness of occupational safety issues in the workplace
- Develops and directs the administration and continuous maintenance of a diverse range of policies, procedures, and workforce safety programs and plans including the Safety Management System (SMS), the Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTSAP), and the Bus Systems Safety program.
- Contributes to the development and maintenance of the Emergency Preparedness Program, including program modifications to adhere to regulatory requirements
- Contributes to the development and maintenance of the District's Emergency Operations and Business Recovery Plans.
- Oversees and leads staff in conducting audits and analysis of hazards, workplace injuries, accident investigations, trend analysis, development of corrective action plans (CAPs), and regular safety awareness campaigns.,
- Identifies trends and opportunities for the development of safety training programs
- Develops, administers, and controls the unit's budget; directs the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, and supplies
- Continuously monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of safety programs and procedures; identifies opportunities for improvement;
directs the implementation of change.
Serves as a liaison to other departments, divisions, and outside agencies including the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and California OSHA;
attends meetings as necessary
Provides highly complex assistance to Management and staff; develops and reviews staff reports related to assigned activities and services;
presents information to the Board of Directors and various commissions, committees, and boards.
- May provide recommendations for corrective and / or disciplinary action in response to safety violations.
- Stays abreast of changing laws, regulations and procedures pertaining to safety, security and risk management
- Performs related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS :
- Seasoned Safety Manager with MINIMUM 8 years’ experience with 3+ years managing people
- Knowledge of safety management systems
- Experience with change management, building and implementing safety programs, and executing throughout an organization
- Able to communicate their experience in : safety processes, successful track record of leadership of teams and programs

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
- May be tasked with lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 25 lbs., if able to do so.
- Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time and walk / stand for moderate periods of time.
- Must be able to bend at the knees and waist frequently
- Must be able to repetitively use a telephone and a computer mouse and keyboard.
