Job Objective
To promote the mission and values of the Greene County Public Library. To carry out objectives and goals of the strategic plan to better serve the community.
To serve as Bookmobile Librarian, plan and provide services and programming for children and facilities who utilize the Bookmobile.
To promote early childhood literacy. Will work under the supervision of Head of Mobile Services, but will often work unsupervised and expected to solve problems independently.
Requirements
Essential Job Functions
- Plans, designs, and delivers story times and programs to serve children and facilities who utilize the Bookmobile.
- Assists children in finding books and other materials on the Bookmobile.
- Checks out and checks in materials using computerized system; registers borrowers; handles circulation questions. Maintains a ready supply of new library card materials.
- Evaluates and maintains the Bookmobile collection to reflect the needs of the facilities and children who are served. Makes recommendations for additions to the collection as well as removal from the collection.
Prepares new library materials for circulation.
- Plans and / or prepares displays, bibliographies, and other informational materials.
- Visits schools countywide to promote library services or programs.
- Opens, closes, and drives the Bookmobile.
- Troubleshoots all electronic resources and equipment in the department.
- In the absence of the department head assumes person in charge responsibilities.
- Assists in training employees.
- Gathers statistics and prepares reports and completes other projects as assigned.
- Participates in countywide children’s services and attends meetings of the Youth Services Council.
- Keeps abreast of current developments in the field through attendance and participation in conferences and workshops and through programs of continuing education, professional reading, and participation in professional groups.
- The supervisor may require other related duties. These duties are nonessential functions of this position.
- Attends conferences, workshops, seminars, and training to maintain knowledge as reflected in training curriculum.
- Keeps abreast of information by regularly reading email, minutes and staff website as well as attending staff meetings.
- Reliable predictable attendance.
- Performs tasks of lower level classifications as necessary.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Ability to provide knowledgeable customer service to assist all library patrons in a timely manner; show tact and courtesy in relations with the public and other staff members.
- Knowledge and appreciation for Children’s literature.
- Ability to multi-task, work in a fast-paced environment and handle difficult situations.
- Ability to handle routine problems independently and keep supervisor informed of departmental needs and concerns.
- Knowledge of library clerical principles, methods, techniques and procedures.
- Ability to communicate clearly and read printed and on-screen information.
- Proven computers skills and ability to input information into an automated system.
- Must be able to lift boxes of books and materials weighing approximately 50 lbs., from floor to table and in and out of Bookmobile.
Qualifications
Bookmobile Librarian II - Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited school required. 1-3 years of Library and / or Customer Service experience strongly preferred.
Some experience demonstrating success with groups of children and strong knowledge of children’s literature preferred.
Bookmobile Librarian I- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Must be able to drive an RV-type vehicle safely (does not require CDL), operate the generator, and possess a valid Ohio driver’s license and meet requirements for driver insurability, as verified through the Library’s Insurance Company.
Must attend driving training during first six months of employment.
Environmental Conditions
- Majority of work is performed in a confined area, but with need for considerable mobility : light lifting, bending, stooping, stretching and sitting at a variety of desks and service points.
- Employee may be scheduled to work evening and weekend hours, including Sundays; schedules may be altered depending on the needs of the library.
