Definition of Classification :
The Graduate Assistant performs various professional and technical duties generally associated with university programs and subjects.
Assignments may be clerical or administrative in nature or technical and / or research focused.
Reporting to the Career Studio Coordinator, this position will help students with several career related needs, including the job / career search, graduate school search / application process, interview practice, personal statement writing, and general professional development advice.
This position is critical to the implementation of office services.
Duties and Responsibilities :
The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following :
- Assists the Career Studio Coordinator in the promotion of office services through classroom and student organization presentations.
- Responsible for answering the main office phone and overseeing the office email account.
- Facilitates individual and group career advising sessions (via scheduled appointment and walk-in services) providing advice and tools to assist students / alumni in achieving career goals that include graduate / professional school attendance or fulltime work upon graduation.
Advising appointment topics include resume / CV reviews, career exploration, mock interviews, personal statement review, part-time / full-time jobs, grad school application preparation, and campus involvement as it relates to student’s career goals.
- Manage various tasks on Handshake including resume reviews and job approvals.
- Create original website resources and weekly training topics.
- Research and / or write blog articles for our monthly student email communication.
- Provide customer service (welcome drop-in visitors, phone calls, and office email responses) and administrative support to OCPD professional staff as needed.
- Twenty-five percent (25%) of this role will include additional duties in one of the following emphasis areas : 1) Employer & Alumni Relations, 2) Marketing & Communications, and 3) Events, Workshops, & Campus Engagement.
- Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualification Guidelines
Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following :
Experience / Training / Education :
Required
Bachelor’s degree is required. Admission to a graduate program at the University of Redlands or other university / college is required.
Preference given to School of Education or School Counseling programs.
- One year of experience in a similar position.
- Clerical or office experience preferred, but not required.
- Experience giving presentations or leading groups, preferred.
Note : Extensive training provided in all areas of responsibility.

Working Conditions :
Standard office and field setting. Duties performed are in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings.
At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort.
Physical Demands :
- Incumbents regularly sit for long periods; walk on a regular basis; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines;
- reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch to file; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information;
see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift, carry and / or move objects weighing up to 10-20 pounds.
