when the Sergeant is not present

GENERAL RESPONSIBILTIIES
Facilitates day to day operational activities of the jail facility. Books, searches and
releases prisoners. Maintains control over secure jail areas. Administers and
supervises meals and visitation. Monitors inmate and visitor behavior. Responds to
emergencies. Prepares and maintains a variety of reports and records. Performs
other miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A. Possess a valid Ohio driver's license.
B. High school diploma or GED.
C. Must be able to pass a background check.
D. Ability to pass a physical exam, drug test, polygraph, and psychological test.
E. Ability to write clear and concise reports.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES
With or without accommodations :
1. Ability to see and accurately identify and distinguish between colors.
2. Ability to accurately identify and distinguish between the smell of different
materials or chemicals.
3. Possess good hearing in order to hear sirens, alarms, the human voice, and
to accurately identify and distinguish between inputs from short or long ranges, and
clearly hear radio messages.
4. Possess an audible voice for in-person and radio communications.
5. Possess upper body strength in order to assist in lifting patients.
6. Ability to sit, stand, stoop and bend, and walk about.

9. Be able to work independent of direct supervision.
NON-EXCLUSIVE LISTING OF DUTIES
A. Books prisoners into the Macedonia City Jail, or for processing to Summit Co.
Jail; and holds prisoners for other departments.
B. Prepares and maintains reports and records as needed.
C. Monitors inmate activity.
D. Maintains jail equipment and supplies.
E. May be assigned to special projects or programs.
F. Reports for work on time, is available for work while at work and gives a full day's
work; is positive in response to directives; adjusts to change; gets along well with
others; is fit for duty.
G. Possesses appropriate motor skills and correct vision to adequately grip, control,
and aim a taser, and likewise possesses sound judgment and decision-making skills
to use within the departmental guidelines set forth.
H. Is physically able to pursue suspects on foot in the event of escape. This would
require the ability to run, climb fences, hurdle bushes, and etc.
I. Possesses the ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and efficiently under, at
times, extreme stressful and hazardous conditions such as severe weather
conditions.
J. Is keenly observant and ever-cognizant of dangerous / hazardous situations and / or
conditions brought to awareness through the various senses.
K. When not assigned to jail assigned tasks, the officer is expected to use selfdirected work time in an efficient manner by self-initiating work on the tasks
identified by supervisory personnel as priorities for this position.
L. Able to use the in-house computer system.
M. Performs related duties as required.
GENERAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Work conditions vary by shift. The majority of tasks are performed inside while
working in the jail area. Few tasks require heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying
heavy loads. Mental alertness is very important because of the need to make fine

discriminations and decisions concerning subtle cues of impending danger.
However, physical and mental demands may change dramatically within a few
seconds and tax the maximum of human endurance. Therefore, incumbents must
maintain a physical and mental state of fitness and readiness that will enable them
to handle (with minimal force and often without backup) recurrent contacts and
involvement with dangerous and potentially dangerous people.
CAUSE FOR REMOVAL
The incumbent may be removed with or without fault, and works at the will of the
Chief of Police.
