Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai’i may apply for Casual Hire appointments, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions.
Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits provided to regular Board of Regents or Civil Service employees.
Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

- For placement in Tutor applicant pool for 2024, and future semesters.
- Positions are for short-term, part-time, tutors with International Programs.
- Contingent upon registration, position availability, course offerings, departmental need, and funding.
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Prepare for and tutor individual or small groups of international students according to student needs and requests, and / or following tutoring program guidelines (online or in-person).
- Assist students with academic work which may include but not limited to academic assignments, projects, presentations, and ESL study (pronunciation, grammar, essay writing, speeches, conversation, and TOEFL and TOEIC preparation).
- Duties include completing tutoring program responsibilities; keeping attendance, providing student feedback, submitting tutoring reports to coordinator, communicating with office and coordinator, developing lesson plans and teaching / learning materials, conducting off-campus lessons;
other duties as assigned.
Successful candidates will be placed in the 2024 and ongoing tutor pool.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (or to be within a year of completing a Bachelor’s Degree) with some experience in academic teaching or tutoring;
- Understanding of, and respect for, a culturally diverse student population;
- Or equivalent competencies for the above listed qualifications.
Desirable Qualifications
- 1 year of experience in ESL tutoring or teaching ESL in a classroom setting
- Some familiarity with International Programs of Outreach College
- Experience teaching a wide variety of courses, levels, and age groups
- Familiarity with ESL approaches; overseas / cross-cultural experience;
- Experience learning a second language and proficiency in a second language;
- Demonstrated successful experience tutoring or teaching ESL (online or in-person)
