Emergency Management Coordinator

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) at Stanford University, as part of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research (VPDoR), supports and advances the teaching, learning and research activities at Stanford by promoting a safe and healthy campus environment. Our mission is to provide and coordinate programs and services that minimize safety, health, environmental, and regulatory risks in a manner consistent with fiscal and environmental stewardship. We are comprised of 9 technical groups with more than 50 specialists who work in the field with top researchers, faculty, staff, and students to support the mission and research of Stanford University. The work environment is team-oriented, collaborative, deadline-driven, and dynamic.

In addition to providing routine EH&S program services, our staff provides support as needed during university emergencies. All EH&S staff are to comply with governmental regulations and University policies and procedures regarding health and safety and are expected to serve as strong models and advocates for research health and safety.

EH&S seeks an Emergency Management Coordinator to join the Stanford University's Office of Emergency Management (OEM). You will serve as the unit's lead coordinator for the development, delivery, support, oversight and management of training through the Emergency Management Program. This position will be responsible for developing, conducting, and evaluating exercises related to emergency preparedness and response efforts, recommending improvements (policy, infrastructure, training and equipment) pursuant to lessons learned through drills and exercises, integrating exercises into university, local and statewide plans. You will manage and coordinate maintenance and readiness of OEM facilities and resources. In this role, you will :

  • Identify, assess and monitor workplace and environmental hazards, including but not limited to, chemical, physical, biological, and radiological. Recommend improvements to minimize hazard potential.
  • Conduct investigations by compiling and analyzing data of potential hazards, unsafe conditions or environmental concerns. Share findings and recommendations to limit risk.
  • Provide technical advice and interpretation of local, state, and federal regulations to achieve compliance with government and university policies.
  • Develop and conduct employee and student training, education, and awareness of environmental, safety and health activities, and / or programs

Minimum requirements :

  • Education & Experience : Bachelor's degree in arts / science in related allied / scientific field and one year experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response / management, environmental science, and / or allied / scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • To be successful in this position, you need to bring :
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct risk assessments / evaluations and provide recommendations for risk mitigation or hazard identification.
  • Quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills.
  • Basic understanding of environmental, health, and safety principles and practices; government environmental, health, and safety requirements and university policies; and related knowledge of pertinent scientific fields to which this background can be applied.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and detail orientation and ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits).
  • Additionally, preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities would include :
  • Knowledge of : Federal and state disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation programs; practices and standards relating to emergency management; contemporary principles, practices, and theory of management techniques; and organization, functions, and activities of institutions of higher education.
  • Ability to : Identify potential hazards and recommend necessary preparedness and response actions to protect public safety and property; maintain effective working relationships; work effectively without close supervision and manage multiple projects concurrently; exercise judgement and initiative during stressful emergency situations and adopt effective courses of action; react quickly, efficiently, and calmly in an emergency situation; demonstrate tact and professional demeanor; communicate effectively orally and in writing at a level commensurate with successful job performance; maintain records and prepare reports and briefings; interpret a variety of codes, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to emergency management; use a wide variety of computer software applications and systems.
  • Certifications and Licenses : Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial Class C Driver's License.
  • Physical Requirements :
  • Being able to frequently stand, walk, and perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand.
  • Will rarely need to kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach / work above shoulder, twist / bend / stoop / squat, grasp lightly / fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and / or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.
  • Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver's license.
  • Ability to drive day or night.
  • Working Conditions :

  • Must wear personal protective equipment as defined / required by job assignments.
  • May rarely be exposed to potential workplace hazards including but not limited to extreme ambient temperatures, electrical sources, radiation electromagnetic fields, elevated noise, chemicals, biohazards, and allergens.
  • May rarely work in confined spaces or at heights ? 10 feet.
  • Work Standards :

  • When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.

  • The expected pay range for this position is $102,100 to $114,551 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on a wide range of factors that are unique to each candidate including but not limited to geographic location, knowledge, skills and abilities, relevant education, depth and breadth of experience, performance; as well as other business and organization needs such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the minimum qualifications, departmental budget availability, and market and internal equity across the unit, department and reporting relationships.
