POSITION SUMMARY
The Dental Hygienist is responsible for cleaning and polishing teeth, instructing patients in good hygiene habits and after-care for dental treatments rendered;
and providing other preventative dental instruction. The Dental Hygienist works chairside as needed during examinations and treatments as requested by the Dentist.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Reviews patient’s medical history; charts existing restorations, periodontal charting and probing. Maintains patient records.
Evaluate periodontal status.
- Exposes and develops x-ray film. Makes impressions for study casts.
- Performs intraoral and extraoral examinations; examines gums to identify signs of disease, feels lymph nodes under patient’s chin to detect signs indicating presence of oral cancer.
- Cleans teeth and beneath margins of gums using dental instruments. Removes excess cement from coronal surfaces of teeth.
Removes sutures and dressings. Places and removes rubber dams, matrices, and temporary restorations.
- Performs dental prophylaxis; applies fluorides and other cavity prevention agents; provides oral hygiene instructions.
- Assists dentist during exam and treatment planning.
- Provides clinical services and health education to improve and maintain oral health of school children.
- Conducts dental health clinics for community groups to augment services of the dentist.
- May perform other duties as required.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Education : Requires Associate’s Degree in Dental Hygiene; Bachelor’s Degree preferred
Experience : Minimum of three years experience as a Dental Hygienist
Licenses or Certifications : Licensure by State Dental Hygiene Board, CPR Certification, administration local anesthesia, administration or monitoring of nitrous oxide, Prosthetic Function Certification, Restorative Function Certification
