Teacher / Instructor-Army JROTC Program

Description : Independence Missouri School District (ISD) is seeking to expand its offering of Army JROTC program curriculum.

Location : Van Horn High School

Salary : Will be determined using the Minimum Instructor Pay (MIP) calculations. For JROTC instructors MIP is the difference between retired pay and the active duty pay and allowances (excluding hazardous duty and special pays) that an Army JROTC instructor would receive if ordered to active duty.

Qualifications :

Applicant must obtain JROTC instructor certification from US Army Cadet Command IAW CCR 145-2, dated 1 July 2007 and instructor application and certification requirements outlined at www.usarmyjrotc.com

Applicant must hold a minimum of at least an Associate's Degree, a Bachelors Degree is preferred

Applicant must obtain Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Career Technical certification within three years of initial employment with school district (CTAC-ICEC-CEC)

Applicant must be honorably retired from the US Army in pay grade of E6 or E7, E8 retiree may be considered based upon limited applicant pool

Applicant may not have been retired from military service for more than three years from date of initial employment with ISD

Applicant must be of good moral character and have the mental ability, positive attitude, physical appearance, stamina, condition and neatness required to favorably represent the JROTC program, the Army and the Independence School District (ISD) before the community

Applicant will demonstrate the professional ability to lead, motivate and positively influence young men and women of high school age to learn and develop leadership, self-reliance, discipline, responsiveness to proper authority and the attributes of an active good citizen

Reports To : JROTC Senior Army JROTC Instructor and building Principal

Job Goal : Teach the Army JROTC curriculum. A content based curriculum which fully or partially addresses a number of national academic standards - to include Common Core State Standards (CCSS) - containing course work on leadership, civics, geography and global awareness, health, and wellness, language arts, life skills, and U.

S. history. The curriculum is based on the principles of performance-based, learner-centered education and promotes development of core abilities : capacity for life-long learning, communication, responsibility for actions and choices, good citizenship skills, respectful treatment of others, and critical thinking techniques.

As important as "what" is learned in JROTC is "how" it is learned. JROTC Instructors are trained to utilize a range of technologies and develop social / emotional skills, support academic content through gaming and simulations, and promote the role of social media.

Army JROTC students engage in meaningful, purposeful activities that lead them to demonstrate success through a portfolio of accomplishments.

Performance Responsibilities : Army JROTC instructors are deeply involved in their communities in and out of the classroom.

They teach leadership and citizenship education. They also serve as liaisons between the Army and civilian agencies and perform career and performance counseling for JROTC Cadets.

They help plan, facilitate and support activities like military balls, cadet competitions, cadet newspaper production, military ceremonies, community service, and charitable activities.

They provide instruction in drill and ceremonies and in the principles of leadership and personal management. Instructors devote themselves to the Cadets in the classroom and during extensive extracurricular activities.

Their hard work and devotion have resulted in an Army JROTC program which is highly acclaimed on local, state and national levels

Terms of Employment : Individual will be offered an 10 month modified teaching contract with salary based upon the US Army Cadet Command minimum instructor pay (MIP) formula.

The teaching contract is renewable on an annual basis, based upon satisfactory job / duty performance.

Evaluation : Periodic classroom observations and annual teacher performance evaluations will be performed IAW ISD policy as well as and in addition to those observations and evaluations required by Cadet Command Regulations.
