Job Summary

The Nair Lab studies the genetics of ocular diseases with a primary focus on glaucoma and retinal diseases. Glaucoma is a common neurodegenerative disease and a leading cause of irreversible blindness.

Under direct supervision and training,

the research associate (SRA I / II) will work to identify genes, molecular mechanisms and cellular networks contributing to glaucoma.

The lab employs a variety of multi-disciplinary approaches to dissect the role of complex disease associated genes at a mechanistic level.

The lab has successfully combined the use of human genetics and mouse models to uncover critical genes contributing to glaucoma and related phenotypes.

The incumbent will engage in several technical aspects of genetic and molecular biology-based studies using human cell lines as well as other genetic mouse models to study human diseases including different forms of glaucoma and associated phenotypes.

Oversee all aspects of management of a large number of cell lines such as primary lines, cancer cell lines and mouse colonies.

Perform administrative tasks including ordering and managing lab supplies, and general lab organization. Assist research projects under the supervision of postdoctoral fellows.

Department Description

The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology is one of the leading ophthalmology departments in clinical care, training, and research nationwide.

The Department of Ophthalmology is one of the largest recipients of federal grant funds among peer departments. We are ranked 2nd in overall National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding in the country.

Additionally, we have been the #1 recipient of the Research to Prevent Blindness funding nationwide with nearly $1.2 million granted in a single year.

Overall, the Department has a wide-ranging portfolio of 60 active research grants.UCSF's renowned eye care services is in a state-of-the-art home, the Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision (WGVCV).

Located at UCSF's Mission Bay Campus, the center houses the Vision Clinics, where many of UCSF's eye care programs relocated, as well as research and teaching facilities.

Ophthalmology conducts its patient care, teaching, research, and public service activities currently at multiple UCSF campuses : Parnassus, Mt.

Zion, Veteran's Administration Medical Center (VAMC), San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH), East Bay and Benioff Children's Hospital at Mission Bay and in Oakland.

The Department sponsors numerous invited speakers, research seminars, journal clubs, as well as a postdoctoral training program focused on mentorship, networking, and recognition.

The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology consists of approximately 300 full time employees (FTE's) (including UCSF Health employees), including faculty, basic scientists, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, residents, fellows, clinical, research and administrative staff.

Required Qualifications

SRA I : BA / BS / BSc degree in Molecular and Cell Biology, Neuroscience, or related biological science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position;

and / or equivalent experience / training.Must be efficient and organized with meticulous record keeping skills.Practical knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques acquired in school.

Practical knowledge of basic biochemistry techniques acquired in school.Must have strong communication skills, computer skills, be highly motivated and work well as a team or independently.

Ability to work independently and effectively after receiving instruction, while managing and prioritizing multiple projects.

Cell and molecular biology experience as obtained in school.

SRA II

In addition to the above, one or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position;

and / o r

equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

Laboratory experience with human pluripotent stem cell.Experience generating human iPSC derived astrocytes and neurons.Experience generating viruses.

Experience with CRISPR and genome engineering.Computational skills for RNA-seq data analysis.
