PRN Nightshift (24 hrs per month)
Job Summary :
Provide family-centered nursing care & education to the antepartum, laboring, postpartum, maternal newborn couplets & special care nursery patients / families.
Provide perinatal & follow-up testing & visits. Directly supervises nursing assistants & unit secretary. Requires interpretation of fetal monitoring.
Provides basic resuscitative care for newborns in the delivery room. Technical responsibilities (i.e. computer, Mobilab, hearing screen).

Duties / Responsibilities :
- Uses only approved abbreviations.
- Understands patient safety goals & actions taken.
- Uses 2 patient identifiers before giving treatments, demonstrates process.
- Understands read back of verbal orders / critical lab values & can state process.
- Understands procedure to clarify physician orders.
- Uses standing orders when indicated.
- Accurately calls report to MD as warranted by condition; reports to other providers as needed.
- Reports sentinel events or adverse drug reactions or incidents as warranted.
- Uses final verification before invasive procedures & can verbalize correct process & documents in EHR.
- Reassesses patient in response to changes in condition after intervention as needed & documents in EHR.
- Communicates with & provides education to patients, caregivers, & family members in a timely manner (using respect & dignity when dealing with death & dying) & documents in EHR.
- Documentation of fetal heart interpretation is accurate & timely.
- Provides & documents patient & family teaching from time of admission throughout stay & documents every shift.
- Provides family centered, couplet care. Includes family in care & teaching. Does not separate mother & baby unless medically necessary.
- Assessments are complete & timely.
- Communication is variance / problem focused & appropriate interventions taken.
- Care plans are initiated, individualized, & updated.
- Participates in follow-up calls, follow-up NB visits & preadmission phone calls.
- Participates in outpatient visits, NST, OB checks, & injections.
- If identified as triage nurse for the shift, will be the unit lead & manage unexpected influx of patients & the assignment per nurse.
Will communicate with MMH SPV, & lead resuscitations.
- Follows protocol for Pitocin drip administration.
- Follows standard of practice for pain management.
- Appropriately documents administration of meds on eMAR using BMV.
- Clarify orders with MD as needed.
- Administers medications in a timely manner.
- Performs 3-minute hand scrub prior to beginning each shift.
- Enforces visitation guidelines per policy.
- Performs responsibilities during Code Pink drills.
- Fills out critiques for emergency c-sections, resuscitations, & transfers.
- Knowledgeable in use of equipment. Maintains equipment (cares for cables, etc.) & reports problems with equipment.
- Attends monthly unit meetings & reads minutes of meetings. Attends mandatory inservices & meetings.
- Up-to-date with fetal monitoring seminars as required
- Completes monthly competency articles / tests.
- Takes the initiative to increase knowledge & skills by reading, practicing with equipment. Looks up diagnosis, treatments, & medications that you are not knowledgeable about.
- Up-to-date on Neonatal Resuscitation certification.
- Up-to-date on mock codes.
- Completes projects & assignments accurately & timely. Is productive during "downtime".
- Verifies, acknowledges, & signs off on orders timely & accurately.
- Documentation is done "real time" at point of contact in patient room.
- Physicians are notified of non-reassuring fetal heart tracing, variances, change in status; accurately & timely.
- Verbal / telephone orders are "written, read back" & clarified.
- Communicates pertinent information with manager in a timely manner.
- Functions as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Can navigate efficiently through EHR to find necessary patient information.
Required Skills / Abilities :
- Strong customer service skills
- Effectively communicates both verbal & written
- Able to multi-task, prioritize,interpret & be assertive when necessary.
- Able to perform basic nursing skills
- Able to use medical equipment, i.e. vital signs machine (temp, pulse, respiration, blood pressure), fetal monitors, & radiant warmers.
- Able to operate basic office equipment.
Education and Experience :
- Minimum Associates degree in nursing, Bachelor's degree preferred.
- No work experience required.
- Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Indiana.
Physical Requirements :
Constant walking, standing, talking & use of hands; frequent reaching.
May need to lift up to 25 lbs; occasionally up to 50 lbs
