The opportunity

The Product Development and Engineering job family is the core of Magic Leap’s revolutionary AR capabilities. These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering and technical operations, performing cutting-edge and complex scientific research and development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces.

  • Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap’s AR products and services;
  • designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes;

interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications; and collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product and features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting and exceeding our customer’s needs and our business objectives.

As a Senior Optical Engineer on Magic Leap's Hardware Engineering team, you will work with an experienced cross-functional team to develop and manufacture innovative leading edge optical components for AR / MR devices.

The team features a collaborative and hands-on environment that fosters engineering excellence, creativity, and innovation in the interdisciplinary areas of optical metrology and testing, device fabrication, display technologies, image processing, and color sciences.

This role is based on our Austin, TX office and will require you to come into our office regularly. Relocation assistance offered.

What you’ll do

  • Perform characterization and measurements of optical components for augmented reality display systems.
  • Design, build, and verify hardware and software performance of specialized optical metrology tools and imaging systems.
  • Statistically analyze novel optical designs and troubleshoot deviations from performance expectations.
  • Create new test recipes, run repeatability tests, and generally maintain metrology tools.

The experience you bring

  • 5+ years of professional experience in optics or equivalent relevant experience in an applicable field. We are most interested in your total experience and professional achievements.
  • B.S. in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related engineering field.
  • Experience in optical metrology methods and instrumentation including camera and imaging systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of optical assembly, alignment and test methods and field assessment of optical systems in a laboratory environment
  • A hands-on background in test automation and creating custom optical test systems, including precision alignment and fast prototyping of complex optical systems.
  • Matlab and / or Python programming skills in digital image processing.

It’s exciting if you also have

  • M.S. in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related engineering field.
  • Experience working in the AR / VR industry.
  • Knowledge of color science, colorimetry, image quality metrics (camera and display), and algorithms for digital image processing.
  • Experience with commercial optical design software tools (e.g. Zemax).
  • Working knowledge of statistical processing software such as JMP.
  • Opto-Mechanical design (Solidworks, Fusion 360 etc.) and 3D printing experience.

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level and location. In addition to salary, Magic Leap offers a discretionary bonus, equity, and a fully comprehensive benefits package for eligible employees.
