Position Summary :
Consistent with the Christian mission and vision of the YMCA of Middle TN, and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, under the direction of the Equestrian Director, the Lesson Instructor is responsible for the training of technical and tactical skills, rules and character development necessary for Camp Widjiwagan’s year-round horseback riding lesson program.
Essential Functions :
Model the YMCA core values : Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
Represent the YMCA and maintain good communication with parents and / or participants
Lead a high quality lesson as directed by the Equestrian Director to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals
Maintain proper care and handling of animals before, during, and after each lesson
School horses before lessons, as needed
Provide energized, fun, safe, and educational instruction to both beginner and intermediate riders
Learn participants’ names and encourage participant interaction
Begin and end each lesson on time
Exhibit a true team player attitude and proactively support coworkers with maintenance and cleaning of barn, tack, and all Equestrian facilities
Keep accurate lesson attendance records
Report to MOD or supervisor immediately - and document - any accident / injury / incident
Return all equipment to proper place (, saddles, bridles, brushes, etc.)
Maintain working knowledge of equestrian and YMCA trends to provide effective information and training to participants
Attend staff meetings and training sessions
Qualifications
Passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA
An enthusiastic personality with the desire to serve volunteers, guests, participants and staff to create a culture of service
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
Must present a professional image and possess conflict resolution skills, and demonstrate sound judgment and initiative
Minimum 18 years of age
High School diploma or equivalent preferred
Minimum three years’ experience in horse handling
Some experience teaching lessons preferred
Certified Horsemanship Association, United States Dressage Federation, and / or comparable certification preferred
Certifications Required :
Before start of 1st shift : New Hire Orientation training
Within 30 days of hire : CPR Pro / First Aid / AED
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand; walk on uneven surfaces; sit; handle or feel objects;
reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
The employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level is usually minimal to moderate.
