Job Summary :

Core responsibilities of this position include :

The Sign Language Interpreter position is a part-time non-benefitted position within the Disability Support Services program.

This positions primary responsibility is to facilitate communication, understanding, and to support the student-learning environment for students who are deaf or hearing impaired.

The responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to attending courses / campus events to interpret for assigned students;

participate in small group events / activities, attend labs, or assigned tutoring to interpret on behalf of the student and to interpret student communication back to necessary participants.

Other tasks may be assigned based on contemporary institutional need .

Compensation : $40 - $65 per hour based upon experience and certifications.

Screening Date : Screening to begin immediately.

Start Date : As soon as possible after offer is made.

Responsibilities :

Essential Functions :

Provide post-secondary interpreting or transliteration services in the communication mode most readily accessible to the student.

This includes ASL, PSE, CASE, or SEE

  • Attend assigned courses, events, labs, tutoring sessions to interpret for assigned students
  • Team interpreting by rotating at regular intervals, usually every 20-30 minutes, to provide continuity in the message transmission
  • Represent the college in a professional manner; attire should be interpreter appropriate and match the formality of the most formal instructor for whom you are interpreting
  • Provide effective communication between team members, faculty, staff, students and the D.S.S program to insure a conductive and functional educational environment for the student
  • Support effective communication and resolution of any communication barriers / issues for the student; inform / elevate any unresolved issues or concerns to the D.S.S. team
  • Adhere to NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct
  • Communicate effectively with Instructors / faculty to establish a positive and effective learning environment
  • Accurately complete necessary department forms, summaries, or documentation as needed
  • Maintain appropriate composure, conduct, confidentiality and respect for all individuals during the interpretation process
  • Engage in professional developemt to improve individual skill sets and maintain knowledge of industry / profession changes.
  • Apply The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) laws. Much like the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct, FERPA requires that student information remain confidential

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Knowledge and ability to effectively and ethically respond to a multitude of unique interpretation situations with respect and confidentiality
  • Possess EIPA 3.5 or higher or RID NIC Certification
  • Ability to effectively and accurately perform Sign Language to meet the educational needs of the assigned student(s)
  • Knowledge of Sign Language vocabulary pertinent to the subject matter
  • Excellent customer service skills; ability to communicate clearly with a variety of people, in one-to-one and small group settings either face-to-face, by telephone, or by other electronic means ability to communicate in an informative manner, effectively listen, and be able to handle escalating situations with concern and confidence.
  • Ability to support time-based requests; able to function effectively in a multi-tasking, fast-paced environment with deadlines, frequent interruptions, and some interpersonal pressure.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to effectively and professionally execute the essential functions of this position with proven capabilities in establishing appropriate professional rapport, communicating with courtesy and tact, accurately determine others needs, collecting necessary information, and follow-through when requested
  • Ability to travel when necessary
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions in oral, written, or diagrammatical form (e.g., a flow chart of a process) and consider possible

Physical / Mental Demands :

  • Ability to stand and maintain mental focus to produce correct sign language for up to one hour and fifteen minutes
  • To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, an employee must be able to maintain appropriate composure and necessary confidentiality with regard to both past and current employee, student, and donor data;

documents; issues; etc., and respect privacy needs of employees, students, donors

The ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines is required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position;

there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required

  • While performing the essential functions of this position a variable work schedule may be required including long workdays, evenings, and weekends as needed
  • There may be occurrences of interacting with employees and / or students, past employees and / or students, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations
  • While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities
  • There may be multiple / daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and / or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
  • An employee must frequently lift and / or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to 35 pounds to perform essential position functions
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds

Qualifications : Minimum :

Minimum :

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of experience interpreting at the level of a ADA Qualified Interpreter

Preferred :

  • Associate degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting or a related field of study. (e.g. Disability Studies, Speech Pathology, Audiology, etc.)
  • Two years of experience interpreting in a post-secondary educational environment
  • Possess an Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) with a rating of 3.5 or higher and / or possess a Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) National Interpreter Certification (NIC)

Experience working with people with disabilities preferred
