Description
The incumbent is responsible for the enforcement of local and state building codes. Conducts building code inspection as licensed.
Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, reports, and results obtained.
Examples of Duties
- Inspects new and existing buildings during and after construction to ensure compliance with the Florida Building Code, approved plans, and any other applicable code.
- Reads and interprets construction drawings.
- Performs continuous study of updated codes and changes in local, state, and federal laws as they relate to construction and inspection.
- Acts as mediator to resolve minor disputes between owners, builders, and developers.
- Covered under other duties as assigned
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED. (Proof of education must be uploaded with application).
- One (1) year of related experience.
Licenses, Certifications or Registrations :
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.
- Must possess or obtain within 90 days of employment, provisional licensing as a Building Inspector through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.
- Must obtain certification as a Building Inspector through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation within twelve (12) months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the City code of ordinances.
- Knowledge of the geography of the City.
- Skill in interpreting and applying codes to field problems and situations in a fair and impartial manner.
- Ability to explain and enforce the state codes with firmness and tact.
- Ability to handle complaints / situations in a courteous and efficient manner.
- Ability to work independently and to make sound decisions based on well established procedures and municipal regulations.
- Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to use a computer to perform database functions.
- Ability to operate a smart phone and or tablet for inspection purposes
PHYSICAL DEMANDS :
- Ability to work in heat, cold, around noises and other undesirable weather conditions.
- Ability to operate motor vehicles including small trucks, vans or cars in a safe and efficient manner.
- Ability to hear and comprehend conversations spoken at various tones of voice and various speeds.
- Ability to see, read, write, speak and comprehend conversation and symbols in English.
- Ability to operate a camera which requires dexterity in hands and fingers.
- Ability to walk, stand and sit for periods of time not to exceed four (4) hours consecutively.
- Ability to safely climb steps and ladders to a height of twenty-five (25) feet in order to perform inspections.
- Ability to lift weights not to exceed fifty (50) lbs. and carry for distances not to exceed fifty (50) yds.
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl and squat periodically.
- Ability to work irregular hours.
- Ability to use hands, wrists, and fingers to write and type.
WORK ENVIRONMENT :
Work requires decision making that could lead to major community or organizational consequences if this position fails to make the appropriate decision at the time.
May be assigned to work in order to support the City's emergency management efforts in preparing for, responding to and recovering from local incidents that may damage our community.
