Arizona Public Media is looking for two engineers to join the team. These vital roles will be responsible for all AZPM Radio and TV transmission systems.

Successful candidates will understand radio and television studio and RF transmission systems and associated equipment. They support AZPM AM, FM, and ATSC television broadcasting studios.

Successful candidates will work independently and with the engineering team to install, operate, test, configure, calibrate, update, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on television and radio studio equipment and transmission equipment.

They are responsible for maintaining and caring for cameras and switchers, IP Links, routing, encoding, monitoring and control, production, microwave links, and RF distribution systems.

They should also have a working knowledge of FCC regulations and engineering best practices and be able to accommodate a flexible work schedule.

Performs other duties assigned. Must be able to accommodate shift changes including, extended hours, weekends, evenings, and 24 / 7 on-call response to technical issues.

Duties & Responsibilities :

  • Conducts daily checking of traffic logs and automation playlists for issues or errors.
  • Visits TV and Radio transmission sites, including AM, TV / FM at Mt. Bigelow and Tumamoc Hill, and various translator sites to verify proper functioning and for the performance of regular preventative maintenance.
  • Take readings at minimum bi-monthly for all transmitters. Log into the site's paper log and upload reading data to a shared drive for reference when not on site.
  • Assist with other broadcast-related equipment installation and maintenance in Tucson's main studio facility when needed.
  • Participate in staff meetings and conference calls with the department and assist the Chief Engineer when needed.
  • Respond to AZPM help desk inquiries with the requested information, investigating or responding.
  • Follow up with the help desk with the resolution for their reference and record keeping.
  • Inspect towers for damage, corrosion, or excessive vegetation and clear as needed.
  • Keep EAS logs and FCC compliance information.
  • Test the incandescent tower lighting system to verify all lights are lit visually. Schedule re-lamp and issue NOTAM if a beacon is observed to be non-functioning.
  • Work with UofA staff for building issues, repairs and upgrades.
  • Fill out quarterly tower Inspection sheet and generator log on site.
  • Fill out quarterly reports and keep logs for all sites.
  • Exercise generator regularly.
  • Inspect fuel storage tanks if the site has them.
  • Provides 24X7 technical recovery support services as needed.

Physical Requirements :

Ability to lift 60 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Ability to work independently and in team environment.
  • Detail oriented and quality control minded with the ability to multitask.
  • Demonstrate skill in audio, video, IP and RF systems.
  • Demonstrate skill in radio / TV signal troubleshooting.
  • Must be able to work unsupervised.
  • Must be detail oriented and quality control minded with the ability to multitask.
  • Must have a valid drivers license.
  • Must be able to travel within southern Arizona.
  • Must be familiar with FCC rules and regulations for radio and television broadcasting.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is required and must include experience with AM, FM and ATSC television broadcasting.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
  • Must be ability to travel within southern Arizona.

Preferred Qualifications :

SBE CBTE / CBRE certification.

5) Years experience working with AM / FM radio and television broadcasting, RF systems including IBOC HD radio and ATSC emission systems.

  • 4 year degree in engineering BSEE or 2 years associates degree in electronics and equivalent experience. SBE certification a plus.
  • 2 or more years experience in a 24x7 broadcast radio or television station.
  • Experience with network monitoring tools, voltage meters, spectrum analyzer, power meters and network analyzer.
  • FCC licensure preferred
