Position Focus :

Yale University Library seeks a collaborative and forward-thinking Central Collection Strategist to join the newly formed department of Scholarly Communication and Collection Strategy.

The successful candidate will contribute to a holistic collection development strategy with operational responsibilities for collections fund management, collection development training, and vendor relations.

The Strategist will coordinate and collaborate with colleagues across the Yale University Library system in the implementation of collection development strategies and operations.

The position will be assigned a rank of Librarian 2 to 4 based on a combination of professional experience and qualifications.

Essential Duties

1. Manages central collection development funds. In consultation with appropriate committees and individual librarians, administers the selection and renewal of centrally-funded e-resources and oversees the centrally-funded monographic approval plans.

2. Coordinates collection development and management of the Bass Library collection and Sterling Memorial Library’s Starr and L&B Reading Rooms.

3. Advises and consults with the Head of Collection Strategy in matters related to the collections budget.4. Guides and supports the operational aspects of collection development in all formats, including workflows, assessment, and project planning.

5. Actively collaborates with appropriate librarians and library units on developing new strategies and evidence-based methodologies for the acquisition of scholarly resources and content, its management, and assessment across formats (including print, digital, media, data, and other emerging formats) and across delivery platforms.

6. Contributes to developing a strategy and methodology for the library’s investment in open access.7. Serves as the library’s key point of contact for vendors.

Communicates with vendors to explore and negotiate the acquisition of new multi-disciplinary resources, journal and eBook packages, and bundled resources.

8. Prepares and presents information to appropriate library groups to help inform collection decisions.9. Participates in the development and revision of YUL policies and guidelines related to collection development and management.

10. Leads the internal training and education program for staff with collection development responsibilities.11. Manages public- and staff-facing collection development web presences.

Required Education and Experience

Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited Library school and three years of related experience.

In selected instances, a post-graduate degree in a related discipline may be required or substituted for an MLS.

Required Skill / Ability 1 :

Demonstrated ability in collection development and knowledge of scholarly publishing practices and trends.

Required Skill / Ability 2 :

Demonstrated ability to manage budgets. Demonstrated ability to design and manage projects, bringing them to a successful conclusion.

Required Skill / Ability 3 :

Excellent analytical skills. Demonstrated proficiency in Excel. Experience using quantitative and / or qualitative data to inform decision-making.

Required Skill / Ability 4 :

Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across organizational units.

Required Skill / Ability 5 :

Experience providing training and creating documentation. Experience with vendor relations and communications.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills :

Experience reading, interpreting, and negotiating license agreements.
